Queen Hatshepsut ruled over Egypt in the early 15th century B.C. Although it couldn't have been easy holding a position for which being a man was part of the job description, she reigned for over 20 years, erecting many large monuments and skilfully manipulating the religion-based propaganda that underpinned the ancient Egyptian state. Only an Iron Lady, an ancient Margaret Thatcher, could have pulled it off. Not according to Pauline Gedge in her classic historical romance, Child of the Morning. A beautiful dreamer, Daddy's little girl, the princess and later queen of wants nothing more than to commune with the gods and the beauties of nature and listen to the hymns sung to her every morning as the daughter of the sun. With her lover Senmut and a band of loyal followers, she brings a golden age of peace and prosperity to Egypt: "She smiled ... while the wig was lifted and settled on her head and the Cobra Coronet was slipped into place. She was changed into a Goddess, the golden, shining symbol of a golden, shining country." If such a story does not square with current interpretations of the admittedly meagre historical evidence surrounding Hatshepsut's reign, it matters not at all to those readers who have made Gedge's queen their inspiration and role model. Apart from the obligatory scenes of exotic but tasteful sex, this Alberta Novel Award winner still offers a vivid dream of female realization and a convincing imaginary world. Hatshepsut's engaging character drives the plot in a way not found in Gedge's later, turgid offerings such as The Scroll of Saqqara and The Hippopotamus Marsh. --Robyn Gillam

From Publishers Weekly

While Hatshepsut, Egypt's only woman Pharoah, was considered a god, Gedge portrays her as very much a human being in this fine historical tale.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Awesome!!!!!, Janv. 5 2004

This book blew me away. I feel head over heels in love with it. This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire way through it. I now have the worst desire to see her temple. This tale of a powerful woman was inspiring. I just cannot recommend this book enough. Something every woman should read. I wish someone would make this a movie so more people could experience this story.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Neonjake, Avril 8 2009
I have read this book twice and will read it again. This book tickled my interest in Hatshepsut and that interest continues to this day. I visited the Metropolitan Museum in New York City recently and it has an impressive display on Hatshepsut.
I am currently reading the third in the Lord of Two Lands series. I will write a quick review of them at their site.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Increadible book on the Greatest Female Pharaoh, Jui 21 2008

(REAL NAME)
This is one of my favourite books of all time, it is written with such detail it takes you right back in time to Ancient Egypt and the times of the Pharaoh's. The story of the rise to power of the only female Pharaoh of Egypt is a tale like no other. I recommend this book highly to all those who are facinated by times long past. May the name of the daughter of Ra and her memory never fade.
