2.0 out of 5 stars S.S. General, Mar 18 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: SS General (Paperback)
S.S. General--A good story-historicaly inaccurate,to much one sided.Ex:Dec.'42 Paulus had only about 100 thanks left, not 600.Tigers were not yet in operation in the southern front.Theodore Eicke was a good div.comander in the Demiansk pocket. The author doesn't seem to know the difference between concentration camps S.S.Einsatzgruppen and Waffen S.S.Most Waffen S.S.div. had troops of high calibre, motivated, well trained, they organization more democratic than regular army, recived the most decorations also they suffered extremely high losses.I only agree with the author about one thing:war is a terrible waste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - fact or fiction, Jan 27 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: SS General (Paperback)
There has been much debate online as to whether any of Hassel's exploits are true or not. Whatever the case the books are good reading. For anyone that wants to read an exciting story about the Battle of Stalingrad then this is the one to read. It is certainly unbelievable at times but considering the facts of the actual battle it is just possible these things happened.

Whether Hassel actually experienced this battle really does not matter. Stephen Crane did not serve in the American Civil War but his book the Red Badge of Courage is a classic. This book, along with Hassel's others form a library of informative story telling about the German army during WW2 and the struggle of the average soldier to survive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another WW2 experience, Dec 24 2003
By Tim Kritsch (Kingston ,Elginburg, ON) - See all my reviews
This review is from: SS General (Paperback)
If you want to read about the complete stupidity of war and the pure incompetence of the generals and higher ups whose decisions mean life or death to the common soldier, this is a must read. The auuthor's experiences with his commanders hold true not only for Germany but any other nation which goes to war for whatever reason. The lower ranks on the front lines know the truth which their commanders not in the field have absolutely no idea. The orders from the top can be disasterous.

This is another must read from beginning to end. Its riveting story makes the reader want to read until the book is finished and then perhaps read again.
