Product Description

In almost every country of the world, there is a tradition of basketmaking, using plants that are indigenous to that particular area. But today, the plastic bag and cardboard box have replaced the basket's role of years gone by. However, there is something quite irristible about the smell and the tactile appeal of a country hedgerow basket which is not only home-made, but is sometimes even homegrown, and this book aims to revive interest in this traditional and useful craft. The book offers a step-by-step account of how to make a selection of strong, natural-looking baskets using materials gathered from the annual prunings of a wide selection of bushes, and those which are farmed and can be bought in shops. There are step-by-step photographs of the five basic stages of making a simple round basket, followed by photographs of variations of design and weave, such as oval baskets, handles and borders. Finally, there is a picture gallery of original creations which incorporate other gathered materials such as pine cones, leaves and shells.

Ingram

Vaughan offers a fascinating, step-by-step description of how to make a delightful selection of strong, attractive baskets, mostly using materials which have been gathered from woods, gardens, and hedges. She covers the tools required and gives a detailed description of materials. 116 full-color photos. 57 full-color diagrams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book with gorgeous pictures, Sep 23 2008
By Johanne (from the Great White North) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handmade Baskets (Paperback)
This book has a big section of over 40 types of trees, vines, shrubs, willows that can be harvested, many of them with pictures. It is not so much a book about techniques, rather a book of combining different materials to make beautiful, colorful, original, one of a kind baskets. Weaving techniques such as pairing, wailing and randing are well explained with pictures and illustrations to match, as well as a few examples of borders, handles and lids. The gallery shows a variety of many baskets of all size and shapes that each combine different weaves, materials and colors all in one, which is Suzie's very own and unique style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where do baskets come from?, Mar 24 2000
By A Customer
Vaughan's book emphasizes collecting natural materials for basketry, with neat color pictures of appropriate vegetation. The last part of the book explains simple basket-making. Great enthusiasm builder and very useful guide for collecting. If you want more on weaving patterns as well as materials, look at Jensen's book "Baskets from Nature's Bounty."
