When Matt Damon and his childhood friend Ben Affleck took to the stage at the 1998 Oscars ceremony, Hollywood knew it had to sit up and take notice. Such a short time after gracing the cover of Vanity Fair in 1997, as a near-unknown, the young actor was riding a wave of acclaim and recognition. After his first major starring role in The Rain Maker, and the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting, the personal project which he also starred in, it became strikingly clear Damon was on a short path to stardom.

The son of radical liberal parents, it was not until Matt was sixteen that he decided to pursue a career in acting. He broke into the movie world with a one-line stint in the Julia Roberts vehicle Mystic Pizza. This was followed by performances in Rising Son (1990) and School Ties (1992) along with Ben Affleck and Chris O'Donnell. In 1993 whilst studying at Harvard, Damon decided to drop out, move to L.A. and pursue his dream of becoming a movie star.

His first big break came with the role of a young soldier in Courage Under Fire, starring Meg Ryan and Denzel Washington. He continued to gain greater critical recognition for his lead role in Good Will Hunting. His breakthrough performance in Francis Ford Coppola's The Rainmaker received further acclaim. If this were not enough Damon went on to star in the title role of Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, which has received outstanding reviews. 1999 will see him starring in five Hollywood feature films, thus enforcing his megastar status and popularity.
