5.0 out of 5 stars Alternate take makes for excellent read, Nov 23 2009

(REAL NAME)
This book was quite the revelation. Charles Vess artistically and in written form normally takes an ethereal, paranormal take on his work...see Sandman and Stardust as examples, but this book showed that even the an artist/writer whose work is not as visceral or gritty as say Frank Miller or Stracsynski, can still weave an excellent yarn. The story focuses primarily on Peter and Mary Jane and a "second honeymoon" adventure to Scotland. What ensues is a dark, lyrical and strange adventure in a land where there are no skysrapers and where Spiderman is truly "foreign". The rural setting and superstitious nature of the townsfolk add to the mystery and mood of the story....while the art fluctuates between cherubic children and celtic sorceress imagery, the overall themes found in Spiderman comics, novels, etc. are maintained. Emphasis is placed on Peter and Mary Jane's relationship, hearkening back to the pre-brand new "good ol days" of long time fans. This being said...this story is exotic enough fare to entice even a newer reader of 'ol webhead to give it a good read. Overall, well worth a look.
