About the Author

Sammy Franco is among the world's leading authorities on armed and unarmed combat. Highly regarded as a pioneer and innovator of combat sciences, Mr. Franco is the founder and creator of Contemporary Fighting Arts, a scientific and practical combat system designed specifically to provide the most efficient and effective methods possible to avoid, defuse, confront, and neutralize both armed and unarmed assailants. Mr. Franco has authored numerous magazine articles and several books, as well as a series of instructional videotapes. He has also been featured in newspaper articles and on radio and television programs, including CBS' 48 Hours with Dan Rather.

Mr. Franco is a Law Enforcement Master Instructor who teaches and supervises defensive tactics training for local and federal law enforcement agencies, including the United States Border Patrol. He is a member of the prestigious American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers (ASLET) and is also listed in the "Who's Who Directory of Law Enforcement Instructors." In addition, Mr.Franco is a nationally certified police instructor in the following curriculums: PR-24 Side-Handle Baton, Police Arrest and Control Procedures, Police Personal Weapons Tactics, Police Power Handcuffing Methods, Police Oleoresin Capsicum Aerosol Training (OCAT), Police Weapon Retention and Disarming Methods, Police Edged Weapon Countermeasures and "Use of Force" Assessment and Response Methods. He is also a nationally certified firearms instructor (police and civilian) who specializes in firearm safety, personal protection, and advanced combat shooting.

Mr. Franco holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland and is regularly featured as a speaker at a number of professional conferences. He also conducts exciting and enlightening seminars on the martial arts, self-defense, and firearms. As part of his ongoing mission to deliver "the combative truth," Mr. Franco has also authored seven books. Four of these--Street Lethal, Killer Instinct, When Seconds Count, and 1001 Street Fighting Secrets--are currently available through Paladin Press. The other three, tentatively titled "First Strike," "The Bigger They Are, the Harder They Fall," and "War Machine," are under contract with Paladin.

2.0 out of 5 stars WHAT IS SAMMY AFRAID OF???, Mar 28 2003
Man, this was one weird book!!! Given the price tag, and Mister Franco's reputation, I expected a lot more, but he didn't deliver . . . I guess you're expected to buy the rest of his books and attend his seminars if you want to learn the real "secrets." Very arrogant attitude, and heavy on the machismo, which I didn't much care for. I took note that in the hundreds of photographs of Sammy pretending to spar, he is wearing an automatic pistol and a knife! Why does one need to be carrying a pistol openly in one's dojo? Whom is he trying to impress by this? I also noted that Sammy seemed to be rather uncomfortable in the photograph in which he posed with a large German Shephard . . . I'm assuming that the dog is not his bestest buddy. In this book was disclosed some disturbing information. For example: Mister Franco likes to listen to "Billy Idol" music when he trains, and only one of his students has "earned the right" to wear a black T-shirt (which seems to denote mastery of his "Contemporary Fighting Arts" style). Be advised that most of the 1,001 "Secrets" are simple common sense things that you can find in almost any other book on the subject -- and a few of the "secrets" were either questionable or totally irrelevant (for example, one reads simply: "Evil must be vanquished" -- what the heck is THAT???). I'm not going to speculate upon what type of childhood trauma might've motivated Mister Franco to walk around armed to the teeth, present himself to the world as the "Baddest Man Alive," and write atrocities like "1,001 Street Fighting Secrets," but I certainly will NOT be recommending this overpriced book to you or anyone else! I gave it two stars simply due to the fact that it is not altogether bad.

3.0 out of 5 stars Failed to meet my high expectations, Mar 26 2003
By A reader (Virginia Beach) - See all my reviews
This was a pretty good book, but a lot of the 1,001 "secrets" left a lot to be desired. Most of the info was simple common sense. Didn't much care for the author's arrogance, either. Be advised that this is a fairly expensive book, considering what you get for your money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sort of an Update of "Tao of Jeet Kune Do", Oct 11 2000
By A Customer
The format and layout is similar to "Tao of JKD" but also covers weapons, including handguns. Offers some (about 300 "secrets") useful "concepts/principles" but if you are expecting instruction on techniques, you'll be disappointed. Many (another 600 "secrets") of the 1001 "secrets" are really so obvious that readers will find themselves saying-"duh." The rest of the so called street-fighting principles (that leaves 101) are just the author's recitation of his political philosophy. All in all, not junk, but you'll get more for your money (..."1001 Secrets" is expensive) out of Bruce Lee's original than out of this imitation.
