From Publishers Weekly

Sophia Institute Press, which makes classic Catholic works accessible to contemporary readers, presents The Aquinas Prayer Book: The Prayers and Hymns of St. Thomas Aquinas, translated and edited by Robert Anderson and Johann Moser. This edition is special because it offers Aquinas's Latin prayers alongside the lovely, poetic English translation. "O most loving Father," Aquinas writes in a Eucharistic prayer, "give to me Your beloved Son, Whom now I intend to receive in this hidden form, but hope to contemplate face to face for all eternity." ($9.95 128p ISBN 1-928832-14-8; Sept.) ~ Taoist devotees now have one-stop shopping for three of the major Taoist classicsAfor the first time, Lao Tzu's Tao te Ching, Seng Tsan's "Trusting the Inner Self" and Chuang Tzu's most famous narratives are gathered together in one volume, The Way: According to Lao Tzu, Chuang Tzu and Seng Tsan. Psychotherapist Gerald Schoenewolf's rendition is not translated from the Chinese, which is a pity, but it does attempt to preserve the poetic rhythm of the original texts. (Jain Publishing, $12.95 paper 152p ISBN 0-87573-082-5; Sept.)

4.0étoiles sur 5 Strongly disagree, Mars 1 2004
I strongly disagree with the other reviewer, although I can see where he is comining from, and respect his point of view.
If you are looking for a translation that seeks to accurately translate the words of this elusive text, then this is not the version of the Dao De Jing for you. This translation makes no attempt accuracy or precision.

I have read and studied dozens of versions of these great works and really appreciate the effort made with this version.

The dao is really impossible to put into words, an idea which is expressed quite powerfully in this text (ironically). The idea is for words to guide us to wordlessness through CLARITY of verbal conception. It is in this respect that I believe this translation comes off beautifully. It is clear NOT because it has a western bias, but because Dr. Schoenewolf understands the underlying concepts of daoism very well and is able to express them clearly.

I do agree with the critical review that the illustration are neither beautiful nor helpful.

The dao is like jazz. If it sounds good, it is good. I believe that this version sounds good.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Yuck..., Déc 22 2000
Par Un client
I wanted to like this, I really did. The thought of having these three masters in the same book was enticing, so I took a chance. Big mistake! I own several versions of the Tao Te Ching and have read many more and this one is among the worst. The illustrations are amatuerish and distracting, in fact, down-right ugly; the "verse" is sing-songy and instead of serving to anchor the meaning in the readers mind only agravates matters. While it's apparent Dr. Shoenewolf does have an understanding of the Tao (he's been studying far longer than I have) he's neither a poet nor an artist. I wish I could say Chuang Tzu and Seng T'san faired any better.

If you really must have a poetic rendering of the Tao Te Ching, Witter Bynner's "The Way of Life" is far superior.(Though it has its own problems) However, the first translations I'd recommend are the Feng/English Addiss/Lombardo & John C.H. Wu versions. But, if you really want to understand this most sublime text, do yourself a favor and buy a good translation/commentary like those of Ellen M. Chen (simply outstanding), Richard John Lynn, and also a fine book dealing with the mystical and meditative aspects often overlooked by other authors is "The Guiding Light of Lao Tzu" by Henry Wei.

Please don't get your Tao from the likes of Shoenewolf, Mitchell, LeGuin, and others who can't help but Westernize it. A tip I got off the internet recently seems to hold remarkably true:If it's not published by a University Press - with few exceptions - it's probably not worth reading.
