5.0étoiles sur 5 Great, Mai 23 2006
My first Bukowski book was "Post Office." That set me off in search for all of Bukowski's books: "Factotum" and now "Women." What can I say? Wow! This guy is one edgy author, the way Jackson McCrae or Chuck Palahniuk are edgy with their out-there themes and great writing. Bukowski pulls no punches and it doesn't surprise me that his books are not more popular and more "main stream." Thank God for that! If you liked the works of McCrae--think his "Katzenjammer" or Palahniuk's "Choke," then this will be right up your alley.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A filty sordid classic -- one of his best., Jui 21 2009

This review is from: Women: A Novel (Paperback)
Bukowski goes below the gut over and over and over in this tale of a writer living the highs of the low life.

Celebrated Poet Henry Chinaski loves to drink, gamble and have sex with any woman that will have him, much like Bukowski himself. The semi-autobiographical story is a gritty, pull-no-punches account filled with some of his most memorable, psychotic characters.

Bukowski's writing style is simple and raw, yet compelling and honest. He is graphic and leaves nothing to the imagination. Some of stories in Women are laugh out loud funny, while some are downright depressing.

If you are easily offended, stay away from this, and practically everything else Bukowski ever published.

If, on the other hand, you are wondering why Bukowski is so highly regarded, this is a great place to start since it is easily one of his best novels (it's my personal favourite), but be forewarned -- once you become a fan you will want to read everything he ever wrote.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Very, very good novel, Sep 1 2008

This review is from: Women: A Novel (Paperback)
Bukowski's Women is a truly hilarious novel that, while rich in characters, does not truly develop what is shown. Too often do characters pop in and then vanish. But, truthfully, that's the point of this bildungsroman with a 60 year old character. It drags a bit but the clever sections dealing with writing, love and life are absolutely letter perfect. Not as good as Ham on Rye or Post Office but still hilarious.
