Product Description

From Library Journal

For over a thousand years, the colonists of the planet Erna have struggled to gain control over a land prone to seismic instability and infused with a wild, near-sentient natural force known as "the fae." While sorcerers and adepts manipulate the dark and light sides of this power, the Church maintains its stance in opposition to its use. As the dark side of the fae grows in strength, feeding off the nightmares and greed of the minds that are drawn to it, four individuals form an unwilling alliance to battle the source of evil. Friedman ( In Conquest Born , DAW, dist. by NAL, 1978; The Madness Season , DAW, dist. by NAL, 1990) has produced a splendid hybrid of sf and fantasy in this first volume of a trilogy. Hauntingly memorable protagonists, high drama, and vivid world-building mark the beginning of what promises to be a magnum opus of the imagination. A priority purchase for fantasy or sf collections.

Twelve centuries after the first colonists are stranded on Erna, a seismically active planet inhabited by a natural force that preys on humans' worst nightmares, four colonists begin a mission to confront the evil. Original.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a waste!, Nov 3 2003
By "reremmoss" (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
This whole series of books makes me wish I never learned to read. There is no unity in the world that the author tried to create. The reader never finds anything important about any character or situation in the books. Your left going, "OK, I guess if you don't get out much there was some action." What's the point of fantasy if you feel you could have as much adventure walking out to get the mail? Really don't waste your time.

1.0 out of 5 stars dull dark fantasy, Mar 7 1999
By A Customer
Having read "In Conquest Born" and "Madness Season" I had great expectations. This book started gory and ended dull. The characters were shallow cardboard cutouts who never showed much initiative and spent their time either moaning over past sorrows or wishing things were different. They don't develop from begining of the book to the end. (I slogged through it to the bitter end in the hope that it would improve.) The way the characters interact seemed forced. Although the basic premise of the world/reality where thoughts influence the fabric of the world is interesting, the whole plot line is so bare as to be non-existent. At the end of the book I couldn't care less about any of the characters, their goals (to save their world or not? Phoo!) or if I ever read about them again. I ended up wishing the fae would take over the universe and end their misery. Too bad it has dragged out to 3 books. Please get back to a strong plot with interesting protaganists! We know you can world-build but here it cost you the story!

3.0 out of 5 stars Black Sun Rising: Hope the tempo starts RISING in 2nd + 3rd, May 19 2005
By A.j Day (Edmonton, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
Although this novel has garnered many positive reviews, I do not believe it deserves such rich credit. I bought this trilogy solely based on the plethora of 5 star reviews and found myself sadly lacking in confidence over my transaction. "Black Sun Rising", was a formulaic fantasy at best; slow and grating, predictable and infruriating all at the same time. Friedman has taken what should have been a new and invigorating ideal in fantasy and given it the same pale complexity the likes of which Gerald Tarrant(Antagonist) supposedly wears. Speaking of which, here's another witty response, highly over-rated antagonist!. If you want a complex, dark natured antagonist fraught with an inner battle of good vs. evil but whom tends to lean toward the latter, read the, "Dragonlance Chronicles", trilogy in which you will meet one of the greatest chararcters in the fantasy genre, Raistlin Majere. Although it was an elementary trilogy with formulaic sub-plots, it was entirely enjoyable to read. In short B.S.R was a disappointing entrance to a trilogy, I can only hope it gets better from here on in of which all your other reviews persuade me to believe!.

By any reasonable standards, this is a godawful book.

On a sentence level, it's wordy, "telly" and full of obtrusive dialogue tags. Read more
