Descriptions du produit

From Publishers Weekly

Swim is a Canadian artist who works in fabric, and hers is a stunning collection of designs certain to excite and inspire quilters everywhere. Each piece is graphically simple: a nude faces the sea from a balcony; a girl balances on a ladder, reaching for an apple; five soldiers stand at attention. While Swim includes patterns and clear directions for 25 projects, as well as many color and black-and-white illustrations, she urges readers to find their own inspirations and experiment with techniques. "Anything goes as long as it works"; the "joy" of the title comes into play through finding the creative process. While not all will be as gifted as Swim, even beginners and children can design their own place mats or vests. Purity of form is combined with the richness and dimension of textured material. The slippery silks and satins Swim favors will challenge even the experienced needleworker, along with the nuances of detail work, overlays of materials and the adventure of discovery. Historical Times Book Club selection.

From Library Journal

While each of these three project-ori ented books is written for the beginning quilter, each approaches quiltmaking from a different perspective. Linsley takes the "boutique" approach to teaching quilting. First Steps in Quilt ing teaches basic techniques by leading the reader through the completion of a series of attractive and colorful gift items, concentrating on small quilted pieces for the home, on gifts for babies, and on speciality items for the holiday season. Directions for each item are well organized and complete and color photographs are included for all fin ished pieces. Quilting for Beginners puts more emphasis on traditional hand piecing and quilting, combining solid information on quiltmaking techniques with excellent color illustrations and line drawings, to lead the reader step- by-step through a series of progressive ly more difficult blocks, from the tradi tional "nine-patch" through the completion of a flower applique piece. In contrast to the rather conventional approach of the other books, The Joy of Quilting treats quilting as a creative process and a medium to be used to break out of the boundaries of the tradi tional quilt form. Accordingly, the proj ects incorporated into the book's last chapter are designed to be more learn ing experiences than specific "recipes" for quilted objects. Swim, a Canadian who calls herself a "quiltist," is an art ist specializing in the making of fabric tapestries; and The Joy of Quilting , in addition to gathering together color photographs of many of her works, tries also to convey some of her enthu siasm for the creative process of quilt design. Included are useful sections on materials recommended for fabric tap estries, on designing, and on nontradi tional quilting techniques. All three ti tles are recommended for subject collections and public libraries; aca demic libraries will want to consider purchasing The Joy of Quilting because of its emphasis on quilting as an art form.
