The first title, published in New Zealand in 1983 and making its U.S. debut, introduces the diminutive black dog and a host of canine pals in a cumulative text. They take the town until a giant tomcat sends them all homeward. In the second book (published in 1984), the same motley crew follows the hero in hopes of taking his bone but, one by one, Hairy outmaneuvers them. Ages 2-5.

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Hairy Maclary, a small black dog, has his tail nipped by a caged cockatoo and, leaping up, precipitates a lighthearted pet riot in the veterinarian's waiting room. Lively watercolor and ink illustrations are carefully coordinated with a brief, rhymed text. Realistic yet simplified paintings completely fill each left-hand page and face a right-hand page devoted exclusively to text. The animated feeling of these paintings is derived more from expressive animal faces than from a sense of motion. The animals are well observed and neatly individualized. The use of language is delightful, being musical, playful, and colorful. The print is large and appropriate for beginning readers, but the vocabulary may prove intimidating to those same readers. This reads aloud well; however, previous books about Hairy Maclary are stronger as this story is a bit muddled. The vet enters to restore peace to her waiting room, but it is never clear that she succeeds before the punchline, which indicates that the rumpus is about to start anew. --Cynthia Bishop, Onondaga County Public Library, Syracuse, NY

I, as a mother of 3, absolutely LOVE these books!! My children laugh with GLEE! If you and your children love and respect animals,these books by Lynley Dodd are for you. This "Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy" has to be one of the best ones. She introduces all Hairy's friends and one foe! We change our voices for each dog! What a treasure for years to come!!

As a child I checked this book out of the library 15 times (I'm not exagerating) in a row between the ages of 3-4. I LOVED it. I still remember the tension and excitement I felt when I heard... 'suddenly out of the shadows he saw...' followed by a hearty three year old chuckle as Scar face shrieks. I even remember clapping my hands.

I purchased it in boardbook form for my then 11 month old son last time I was home in New Zealand, he LOVED it. I was surprised when I opened it to find I remembered every word. Unfortunately, it was recently left out in the rain and ruined. However, we love it so much that I am replacing it.

Word of warning. My son used to love it when Scarface would shriek loudly. I did the same thing for my then 10 month old daughter and it petrified her. To this day (she's 2.5 now) she will choose the book, but closes it on the page that starts 'With tails in the air'. Then she puts it on the book shelf and puts other books on top of it.

This book was read to me and I loved it. The rhyme and repetition make it pleasant to read and easy to memorize for those naptimes when you are more tired than your child.

This book is so good that every child in New Zealand knows it, most will know it by heart. I challenge those of you in other countries who know or meet people from New Zealand to ask if they know 'Hairy Maclary'. I GUARANTEE that they will smile. How many other books are that well loved?

This is my 27 month old sons absolutely favourite book of the moment, I love seeing how much he enjoys it.
