Product Description

Have you ever heard of your inner child? Well, this is the classic book that started it all. In 1987, Charlie Whitfield's breakthrough concept of the child withinthat part of us which is truly alive, energetic, creative and fulfilledlaunched the inner child movement. Healing the Child Within describes how the inner child is lost to trauma and loss, and how by recovering it, we can heal the fear, confusion and unhappiness of adult life. Eighteen years and more than a million copies sold later, Healing the Child Within is a perennial selling classic in the field of psychology. And it is even more timely today than it was in 1987. Recent brain research, particularly on the effects of trauma on the brain of developing children, has supported Whitfield's intuitive understanding as a psychiatrist. About HCI Recovery Classics HCI's recovery backlist contains some of the most important and best-selling works in the recovery field. These books are still sought after today, selling more than 100,000 copies per year. Our new line of branded books features expanded editions of our top recovery titles, new introductions, updates on pertinent recent developments in the field, and contemporary new covers and packaging.

Ingram

The "Child Within" refers to that part of each of us which is ultimately alive, energetic, creative and fulfilled; it is our real self-who we truly are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, Jan 13 2008
By Zadius Sky (USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This book, consisting of 15 chapters and roughly 145 pages, is easy to read and well written, but difficult to get through. It was not difficult in a sense of reading it, but it was difficult in an emotional sense. This book has given me great insights and shocks to which it gave me a harsh glimpse into my past. It gave me a lot to absorb.

The strategies, the tables, the stories, and the recommendations in this book are very helpful and encouraging for utilization in one's life. For one to work through the fogs of hidden shame and guilt as well other negative aspects of one's false self, I would humbly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you!, Aug 11 2004
By A Customer
The topic of the "inner child" was quite a hot one about ten years ago. Unfortunately, I haven't heard too much about it in the last few years. But that doesn't mean the subject is dead for there are still a great number of people who believe and seek out this idea. Frankly, I can't understand why the topic is required study in all our schools--we all have issues to deal with. If you're looking for a great place to start concerning your inner child, "Healing the Child Within" is just such a place. Informative and well-written, this wonderful book can and will turn your life around. Would also recommend another great book titled "You can Heal Your Life" by Louise Hay, and a work of fiction dealing with the inner child called "The Bark of the Dogwood." Both are excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Recovering from Dysfunctional Families, Jul 15 2004
By A Customer
I've read about a dozen books lately on various aspects of the lives and recovery of adult children of dysfunctional families, and this is by far the best. I agree with other reviewers that the "inner child" concept is a bit hokey, but the author here doesn't rely on it as an actual separate personality, but rather as a useful metaphor for getting in touch with the anger, shame, and other feelings we were not allowed to express as children. The book recommends many new ways of thinking about things and strategies for dealing with toxic people in our lives, and I believe that any therapist working with adults who had traumatic or difficult childhoods should read it and use the techniques with their clients. This will be a permanent part of my library as I move through my recovery and reclaiming of myself.
