Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The Western media commonly report that in much of the Middle East, anti-Zionism has edged into full-blown anti-Semitism, and Timmerman, in this travel journal intermixed with political analysis, gives potent and frightening examples of this phenomenon. The most visceral, and common, illustration he has found in interviewing Middle Eastern clerics, reporters and politicians is the widespread acceptance of the 1895 fraudulent document The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which details an alleged Jewish plot for world domination. Over the past two decades, he reports, the Protocols have become required reading throughout most Arab countries. Equally frightening is his analysis of the anti-Semitic sentiments routinely found in school texts in Arab countries. Timmerman, who has written for Time, Newsweek and Reader's Digest, has a forthright and compelling journalistic style that is also highly opinionated and often inflammatory. Many of his noteworthy reports and observations are undercut by heedless generalizations, such as his comment that "among European limousine liberals... it has become fashionable to [want Israel] punished by the international community, or simply eradicated," which will seem to many to be a gross simplification of a very complicated political reality. When he is not writing about the Middle East, Timmerman takes on such topics as what he sees as anti-Americanism on U.S. university campuses with the same lack of delicacy. MIT linguistics professor Noam Chomsky is described as typifying "the hate-America-first faction of campus radicals" and Timmerman baldly misrepresents his political positions. Timmerman, whose best selling Shakedown: Exposing the Real Jesse Jackson made the bestseller lists but which was frequently and severely criticized for its reliance on incendiary far-right rhetoric, has touched on some important topics in this book, but they are to a large degree lost in his tendency to overgeneralize and overstate.

From AudioFile

Though not an audiobook narrator by profession, Timmerman is creditable in delivering the sometimes shocking, always compelling content of his book. Perhaps the only weakness in his narration is the occasional edge in his voice that betrays personal bias. Few would begrudge him this stance, considering the scenarios he reveals--a new spate of anti-Semitism in Europe and the United States; various stripes of Arabic fundamentalists fomenting this very distasteful concept as a precept to violence; and the impassive response of much of the world press, as well as its population. However, Timmerman's claims are sometimes tainted by his hectoring. Despite this flaw, Preachers of Hate spotlights a serious global problem. 1.0 out of 5 stars Ignorant Crap, Jul 1 2004
By evenstar_elessar "isismoon2" (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews
The best advice I can give the all of you who think this garbage is so great... do your own research before you make a broad generalization about Muslims. There is a big difference between a Muslim and Muslim Extremist. I suggest you people read the Qu'ran before you pass judgement. Saying that all Muslims are the same is like saying that all black people look alike... we all know that that is a bunch of ignorant garbage. I have read a good chunk of the Qu'ran and have yet to see anything about hate for Jews or Americans. YOu should question everything you are taught or told, and learn to think for yourselves. Timmerman is nothing more than a skin head in sheeps clothing. It's ignorance like this that brings so much hate into the world. I am not just talking about Timmerman, I mean all the hate mongers of the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Timmerman Does Homework, Jun 30 2004
By M (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
Timmerman has obviously done some thorough research here. Timmerman gives good attention to the social problems that French Arab Muslims face and the the radicalism that has been fostered within the lower classes of their society.

In the next edition, Timmerman needs to make his style and transitions smoother, and minimize his occassional theorizing which detracts from his powerfull research and reporting skills.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yet another zionist inspired screed., Jun 18 2004
By A Customer
The book is essentially preaching to the converted. Empire lovers/Jewish extremists, whether they be conservative, liberal, neocon, marxist will love it as it regurjitates the same old rehased propaganda used to demonize Islam or pretty much anyone who doesnt believe in Eretz Israel (Greater Israel).
Offering simplistic and often false answers which characterize and prop up the mistrust between both the Islamic and Western world, the author's own talmudic inspired hatred is no secret. His contempt for facts and support of Israeli terrorism is evident from page 1.
Dont waste your hard earned money on this piece of hitlarian nonsense, go read some Norman Finkelstein or Edward Said instead, that this if you're remotely interested in reality.
