Product Description

From AudioFile

Thriller writer Trevanian turns to a suspenseful romance set in pre-World War I France. Love leads to nightmare and the revelation of a young woman's chilling secret. The writing is meant as a memoir and is purposely stilted. Read aloud, it sounds even more so. Narrator Ray Verna makes some minor but noticeable pronunciation errors. The effect of the quirky, surprise ending is nearly lost in the toneless narration. However, the "buy a tape for your library" notice in the package will be welcomed by librarians. N.B.H. 5.0 out of 5 stars a haunting love story, May 31 2004
By Margaux Paschke (New York) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I wasn't expecting what I got when I randomly picked up this book that proclaimed itself a psychological thriller. The characters contained therein were very memorable and provided haunting images. I'm not quite sure why I never heard of this book before but I'm just glad I stumbled across it. Although it isn't a very short book, it was a fast read because I just couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next. The unanticipated ending was poignant. The author has provided a well written and plotted story and presented it in an almost lyrical fashion. This love story is set in the pre-WWI french countryside and certainly provides the taste and feel of that time and culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant sentimentality....classic literature. 10 stars.
In the Summer of Katya, Trevanian departs from the acerbic, audacious voice with which he formerly spoke with (Shibumi, The Eiger and Loo Sanction). Read more
