About the Author

Karen Miller, who has over 25 years experience in the early childhood field, is well known as a keynote speaker and consultant. She has worked as a teacher for Head Start, as national education director for Children's World Inc. and as a national training director for Min-Skools Ltd.


Josephine Bailey was born in England and trained in performing arts at the Corona Academy in London. As a child, Josephine appeared in many feature films before going on to become a professional dancer. Returning to her love of acting has led to her recent performances for Hanna Barbera, Walt Disney and Nickleodeon.

This is one of the few books that I have had to put down. This book starts with the Heroine Hekat in a small village. It opens as she is sold as a slave/concubine. She eventually escapes and becomes a warrior. There is little development of characters and the author has a horrible tendency of using religious fervour, prayer, devine intervention etc to answer all the questions, problems, conflicts... everything. The main characters make no decisions and rely 100% on "the god" for everything. Hekat is the only character who seems to make any decisions at all. There are little to no repercussions to anything through most of the book. I found myself waiting for the next religious event to be over before the next event. By so heavily relying on religion each event turns in to a predictable scenario where Hekat is granted a new godly power and does what she wants.

I have read several books that use religion more effectively and talk about some of the major issues that revolve around religious belief like doubt, religious literature, tradition, and hierarchy. In this case the author creates a loose hierarchy of Godspeakers and initiates. But there is sacrifice for everything (100s of animals killed per day) pages and pages of gore for daily activities and guidance. It creates characters with no intiative or real desire.

I do not recommend that fans of the innocent mage read this book. Perhaps the author will tackle a new series.
