Product Description

You may not have noticed, but there's something stirring in the Galaxy...

Despite the efforts of the Vogons, and even those of a more-than-typically troubled teenager, the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker's Trilogy continues, much to the delight of its fans (and to the annoyance of the Vogons).

And Another Thing, the 6th book in the Hitchhiker's trilogy, or rather 'double trilogy' as it has now become, is to be written by the brilliantly funny Eoin Colfer, international number-one bestselling author of the Artemis Fowl novels. Colfer is not unaccustomed to strange going-ons and far-fetched story-lines with his celebrated Artemis Fowl novels. Widow Jane Belson said of Eoin Colfer, 'I love his books and could not think of a better person to transport Arthur, Zaphod and Marvin to pastures new.'

Douglas Adams himself once said: 'I suspect at some point in the future I will write a sixth Hitchhiker book. Five seems to be a wrong kind of number, six is a better kind of number.'

Colfer, a fan of Hitchhiker since his schooldays, said:

"I have decided to embark on a very different project. Something unique that I hope will interest you as much as it does me. I have written the official 6th book in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Series. Most of you have probably already read Douglas Adams' insanely brilliant space series. If you haven't then you don't know funny. Take it from me, the Hitchhiker books are bar none the funniest sci-fi books ever written. People have laughed so much reading Hitchhikers that they have had to have organs removed. One guy in France popped an eyeball. I kid you not.

So, what's it all about, this Hitchhikers, I hear you cry. Actually I don't hear you, if I did I would be sitting outside in your driveway, which would be a bit freaky and show how few friends I have. What's it all about, this Hitchhikers, I imagine you cry. It's about Arthur Dent, one of the last humans left alive after the Earth has been destroyed by the remorseless Vogons. Arthur manages to hitch a ride on a spaceship and go planet hopping with his friends Ford Prefect, the Betelgeusean journalist. Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two headed president of the galaxy, pirate and worst dressed man in the universe. And Marvin, the paranoid andriod.

All this hitching and adventuring went on for five books and then Douglas Adams passed away before he could write book six. Hitchhiker has been heard on radio, seen on tv and enjoyed on the cinema screen, there was even a musical version. But the story could never end, until now. I am going to continue on where Douglas left off. Unfortunately for me, he left off on rather a large cliffhanger. Everyone was dead. Which means I have rather a large challenge ahead of me, but it is one I am looking forward to.

The book will be out later this year. It will be called And Another Thing. And I really hope you will board the spaceship with me so we can travel through Douglas Adams' hilarious galaxy together, which will save me having to hang around in your driveway.

See you at Barnard's Star."

3.0 out of 5 stars Time well spent? Time badly spent? Call it time... spent., Nov 16 2009
By Michael De Vos "Alobar" (Saint John, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: And Another Thing (Hardcover)
If you read this book you will be amused in places, pleased to spend time with Ford, Arthur, Zaphod and Trillium, who come off pretty much as Doug intended, but otherwise probably a little cold, and slightly tired.

This is not a Douglas Adams novel. This is a novel written by someone who obviously has great affection for Doug and his work, and really wanted to continue his legacy, but probably shouldn't have bothered. He's also a little too rambling and long-winded, with a complete misunderstanding of the rhythm of Guide humour. (The guide entries come up far too frequently, and seem to be stuck to the page more like post-its of ideas to be incorporated later, rather than perfect little jewels within the flow of the narrative).

All that being said, you will not be completely disappointed by this novel--it has laughs and moments of entertainment--but you also won't be affected by it in the long term. The book will not stay with you like the originals did. The corollary of this being, if you don't read this book, you won't be missing much.

I miss Doug.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another Thing...about And Another Thing.., Nov 9 2009
By C. R. Dickson (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: And Another Thing (Hardcover)
First a caveat...I love anything to do with the Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy.. as a series it is possibly one of the best NON Science Fiction, Science Fiction books ever written. Douglas Adams had a definite flare for creating and recognizing characters and situations that were humourous and thought provoking.
With due credit to Eoin Colfer.. while his effort at continuing the HHG2 series is admirable, and while the story line in "And Another Thing" does follow the general laid out plot of Adams' previous books, Colfer relys too heavily on justifying and explaining the connections between his volume, and those of Doug Adams.
Billing his novel as part six of three.. following Adams' expansion of the famous trilogy through, this book is aimed directly at the heart of those who've already read the preceeding 5 volumes. The story and its plot line would have better been served WITHOUT the constant back referals, explanation and justification from this novel to the past. Anyone reading "And Another Thing" should read the Adams collection first, or there is no reason to pick it up.
Am I being overly harsh?.. I don't think that fans of HHG2 will think so once they've read this book. It left me wanting more than was provided, and thinking what I would have written and included in a "New" volume of Hitchhikers.. had I attempted one. (where is Fenchurch.. the young lady whose feet so fetchingly 'don't quite touch the ground'?)
Even though this review seems negative.. for HHG2 fans.. to say that you've read the whole series.. you will have to read this book, and hope that if Colfer attempts to expand the HHG2 Trilogy to a seventh volume, he will seriously consider less repetitive explanation, and more story.
