From Amazon.co.uk

The title Nobody True is a complicated set of puns on its own plot; adman Jimmy True has no body because he was off on one of his regular astral jaunts when someone stuck him through the heart and carved him up like meat. His rather privileged position as an invisible observer of his own murder investigation enables him to discover uncomfortable truths about almost everyone he knows--his wife, his young daughter, his business partner--and a darker set of truths about the serial killer whose victim he appears to be. Jimmy has many problems with trust--his paranoid mother and absent father have seen to that--and at first his posthumous experiences confirm all his worst dreads. This is a book about learning valuable lessons and not thinking simple versions of the truth are necessarily the most accurate ones; it is among the most odd Herbert horror thrillers and like several of his best books has an attractive emotional core underneath all the gore and nightmare. Occasional wordiness and too much occultist waffle about dreaming, death and soul travel do not stop this also being intermittently one of his most gripping. --Roz Kaveney

From AudioFile

Murder takes on a new dimension when the victim hangs around in spirit, undertaking to identify his killer and bring him to justice. His efforts take on renewed intensity as he tries to prevent the murders of additional victims, including his wife and daughter. Robert Powell inhabits the story's first-person narrator, a quiet fellow who, but for the occasional out-of-body experience, led an ordinary life. The murder victim tells his story at a steady pace that quickens as the suspense builds. Powell gives clear voice to his frustration as he tries to communicate with loved ones, and his pain as he learns of betrayal. 4.0étoiles sur 5 AN OUT-OF-BODY EXPERIENCE..., Fév 24 2008

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This is an intriguing chiller thriller by Great Britain's master of horror and the supernatural. Written as a first person narrative by the protagonist, James True, a successful graphic artist with his own business, the reader discovers that for years James has been capable of having out-of-body experiences. He is able to project his essence, leaving his body behind, as he wanders around totally unfettered by physical constraints. Unfortunately, on his last such foray, he returns to his body only to discover that he had been brutally murdered and mutilated while he was out-of-body.

At first, the police believe his murder to be the work of a serial killer, and, despite his obvious limitations, James sets out hell-bent to find his murderer. What he finds, however, is betrayal, heartbreak, and fear, as he discovers things about his wife, his beloved daughter, and his business partner that he never knew. He also meets the serial killer, a decidedly creepy character that will have some surprises in store for the reader. Just when the reader has it all figured out, the author pulls a rabbit out of the hat.

Peppered with wry, macabre humor, the plot is so inventive that the reader cannot help but keep turning the pages of this book, despite its falling somewhat short in terms of character development. It is an entertaining, quick read.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Nobody true, Déc 9 2005
This review is from: Nobody True (Paperback)
James herbert used to produce gorefests such as the rats and the fog which were damn fine books for their day. After a bad patch with the likes of magic cottage he has since matured into a writer capable of producing something as fine as this. Nobody true is the tale of a man who astral travels until one day he returns to his body only to find that he has been murdered and horribly mutilated. His astral personality then follows a series of events that lead him to solve his own murder. Apart from a predictable ending (sorry james but it cost you a star)this was a brilliant peice of writing and fans of Herbert will love it. One of the things that did make this book outstanding was that it is written in the first person so you really empathise with Jim True. The only time i hav ecome across first person style writing that was better than this was Lucifer Wars by stuart vowell. Nobody true and Lucifer would make great bedfellows and perhaps the two authors should colude on a book between them as Vowell really knows how to write a good ending.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Classic Herbert - Nothin new here, Janv. 16 2004

This review is from: Nobody True (Hardcover)
Die-hard Herbert fans will enjoy this one, as it seems to fit the style of many of his other successes. I thought Herbert did a fantastic job of developing the main character (better than another character I can remember), however as the book progressed I started losing interest somewhat. Conceptually the book is quite interesting but is far too predictable. It is sort of a combination of Fluke and the Haunted.
