Product Description

London, 1020: a few weeks have passed since Thorgils has escaped the clutches of the Irish Church only to find himself at the centre of a capricious love affair with Aelfgifu, wife of Knut the Great, ruler of England, and one of the most powerful men of the Viking empire. A passionate relationship between two unlikely lovers begins to unfold, which forebodes uncontrollable consequences . . . Forced to flee the realm, Thorgils teams up with Grettir, an outlaw feared for his volatile and brooding behaviour. The two men become travel companions and sworn brothers – which binds them together beyond death. At the gates of Byzantium Thorgils' loyalty is put to the ultimate test . . . Sworn Brother continues an utterly compelling journey back in time to a world that is brimming with wonderfully crafted characters and their insatiable hunger for barbaric war and expansion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better then the first book., Oct 25 2005
By Trond Frantzen (Calgary, Alberta) - See all my reviews
This wonderful epic Viking adventure continues into the 2nd book so nicely, I'm sure I could have read it without having read the first one. Few historical novels are written as well as Severin's works. His skill as a researcher shows, and his writing skills shine (he has written 10 non-fiction works previously). Perhaps, because of my Norse heritage, I'm a little biased. But this book (as well as his first in the Viking trilogy) was so enjoyable and so exciting, I can hardly wait for the 3rd entry. This was like ROOTS to me, it is so good!

5.0 out of 5 stars Among the best historical novels ever., Oct 25 2005
By Trond Frantzen (Calgary, Alberta) - See all my reviews
This is one of the very best historical novels I have ever read. Severin's research is excellent. He brings life to the Vikings of a 1000 years ago with realism and excitement. While the lesson in history is outstanding, his character development and prose is even better. What a great book! Thank you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Left me curious, Jul 31 2005
Well, I've just finished this book and I found myself wanting to buy the 2nd in the trilogy just because not much happened in this one. The multiple characters are sometimes hard to follow and the story is a more like a journal as stated in the prologue. I'll know more when I finish the 2nd.
