Product Description

Brilliant brothers Langley and Homer Collyer are born into bourgeois New York comfort in settled times, their home a fin-de-siecle mansion on upper Fifth Avenue, their future rosy. But before he is out of his teens Homer begins to lose his sight, Langley returns from the War in Europe with his lungs seared by gas, and when the death of their parents in the influenza epidemic of 1918 leaves the brothers orphaned, they seem perilously ill-equipped to deal with the new era. Around Central Park carriages give way to motor cars, Prohibition to free love, but Homer and Langley adapt: their townhouse fills and empties and fills again, with servants, lodgers, tea-dancers and gangsters. They are mocked and spied on, embraced by hippies and besieged by bailiffs, but as the world turns ever more incomprehensible Homer and Langley hold fast to their principles of self-reliance, courage, kindness and love, and they endure.

About the Author

E.L. Doctorow is one of America's most accomplished and acclaimed living writers. Winner of (among others) the National Book Award, he is the author of ten novels that have explored the drama of American life from the late 19th century to the 21st.

Homer & Langley presents the life of the Collyer brothers from the perspective of the blind (and eventually deaf) Homer. We experience the claustrophobic life that the two led as it might have seemed to a blind, but sane, Homer who wanted to humor his brother's moods and whims. If that's what you want to read about, you'll probably be fascinated by the mental gymnastics that make living such weird lives seem to be the thing to do.

For me, the subject matter wasn't all that novel. I've known many reclusive hoarders in my time, and their ways and thoughts are familiar to me. I didn't gain any new perspectives from this book. In fact, I think that the book could have been a lot more interesting if Mr. Doctorow had picked Langley as his narrator instead of Homer.

I've enjoyed Mr. Doctorow's books in the past because of the wonderful writing and the way that he weaves his stories into the middle of history. Because since the Collyers were trying to avoid history, there isn't much history for Mr. Doctorow to weave into the story . . . except to note the passing of time.

I hope Mr. Doctorow will pick a more engaging subject for his next novel.

If you want to learn more about the Collyers, look them up on the Internet. It won't take as long as reading this novel, and you'll end up knowing about the same set of facts.

Over the last few years I have started reading EL Doctorow and was looking forward to this book - I enjoyed reading the book - like Doctorow's writing but was very disappointed to find the characters transposed and the time lines completely out of sync with their real life. If I had know nothing about Homer and Langley I would have enjoyed this book much more
