Product Description

From Amazon.com

Veteran hostage negotiator Kate O'Malley has seen humankind at its worst. In fact, she has become something of a legend for her ability to parlay a successful outcome from even the most desperate situations. FBI special agent Dave Richman, introduced in Henderson's Danger in the Shadows, has every reason to have lost faith. But he hasn't and Kate has. From their first encounter during a bank holdup, these two very disparate people are inexplicably drawn to each other. But can they overcome the obstacles? Dave's Christianity is as much a part of him as his desire for Kate, while Kate claims no particular belief in God. And can Dave relinquish his need to protect Kate when it is her job to place herself in danger? But Dave may not have a choice when a secret from Kate's past returns to haunt her--or kill her. Full of surprises, Dee Henderson's The Negotiator is a walk on the wild side and readers will love every thrilling minute!--Alison Trinkle --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

From Library Journal

Henderson's series has an intriguing hook: the seven O'Malley siblings, who adopted each other and changed their names to reflect their new family. In this first entry, Chicago hostage negotiator Kate O'Malley meets Dave Richman (the FBI agent from Henderson's Danger in the Shadows) while she's talking a bank gunman into releasing hostages. Impressed by her professionalism and attracted to her personally, Dave starts courting the aloof Kate, only to discover that she's not a Christian, a major stumbling block for him. As he struggles to understand why she doesn't believe in God, a threat from Kate's past, an airline bombing, a family tragedy, and the discovery of a biological brother threaten to break this strong woman. Solid storytelling, compelling characters, and the promise of more O'Malleys make Henderson a name to watch. Highly recommended, with a cross-genre appeal.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just couldn't get into it., Oct 1 2005
By bobby "life long reader" (Brampton Ontario) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Negotiator (Paperback)
The Negotiator was a reasonably well written novel, but there were many aspects of it I didn't agree with or I didn't like. First and foremost I liked how the author made the kids from an orphanage band together to create a family. That was an excellent decision and it should have made the rest of the book enjoyable, only it didn't.

Kate O'Malley driven from a broken home ends up at an orphanage and creates a family with other children there. She grows up to be a negotiator somebody that walks into hostage situations and talks the person from killing or blowing up things. She's really good at her job. And in the midst of her job she meets Dave Richman whom she falls in love with.

Dave Richman is an FBI agent and he gets caught up in a bank hostage situation and he watches Kate do her job and immediately begins to pursue her. He finds about her past and while working with her stumbles upon Kate's own tragedy and helps her find whose leaving her threatening phone calls and helps her overcome her own insecurities about relationships.

All that is okay, now let me state what made this a very difficult novel to get into. A big issue in this novel is religion. Dave is a Christian and Kate doesn't believe in God, and that makes Dave rethink about "loving" her because she doesn't believe. Dave Richman was a very unlikable character. His character was annoying and I couldn't stand him. Being religious is okay and believing in god is great, but I'm sorry to say that it's wrong to try to convert another that doesn't believe in God. I'm not going to start a debate but I thought even in a character in a novel that aspect of anybody's character is wrong. Some people have good reason not to believe and they shouldn't have God rammed down their throats if they choose not to. I think that made me dislike this book even more. This will be my first and last O'Malley book. The Dave trying to convince Kate to believe really got to me and it made this novel really difficult to like. Sorry Ms. Henderson but not everybody's a believer, opinions shouldn't be changed and feelings shouldn't be altered because someone does not believe in God.

2.0 out of 5 stars the Negotiator, Mar 15 2004
This review is from: The Negotiator (Paperback)
I have to agree with reviewer Yankiwi. this book hits on
religion too much to be in the crime/passion category.
If I want conversion to Christ I will go to church to
seek it.Also the love scenes are non-existant. People in
love do kiss and hold each other. Not worth the read.
