I was very excited when I saw that the second book of the series The Dopple Ganger Chronicles was available. I very enjoyed the first installment and was looking forward to read the new adventures of Erik, Sadie, and Saskia.
Once again the author has put everything to catch the attention of juvenile readers. There's mystery, fast action, and discoveries. This novel continues in what the first installment of the series started - a new way of incorporating a novel with comics. At every page that you turn you won't know what to expect. Is the next page written, an image of something or a comic strip? It is very creative and brings the imagination to life.
This type of novel is particularly interesting for any readers. Many who have reluctant readers praise these new ways of writing books for children. This particular series makes me think of Geronimo Stilton meets the teenage years. Okay the characters are not mice but it's about the same concept if you know who Geronimo Stilton is and/or have read some of the books.
The book literally kept me reading until I finished it. I started it while laying in bed waiting for sleep to come and finished it when I woke up the next morning. Isn't it lovely when a book does that to you? You can't put it down until you are finished with it... Well that's what it did to me. Can you imagine what it will do for a youth struggling with reading?
Not only we rediscover the beloved Erik, Sadie and Sakia but we also found out that one bad guy from the previous book is coming back and this time he is ready to do anything so that nobody stops him. We also meet new characters that will help Erik and offer him a place to stay. And honestly, I can't wait to know what their next adventure will be.
In the last book, we got introduced to a character named Madame Raphael who would appear only to Saskia. Her friends didn't believe her. They thought it was a ghost. But Saskia knows better and identifies her as an angel. Throughout this novel, Saskia will pray for help but instead of praying to the God, she prays to Madame Raphael. I'm a bit concerned about this. We can pray to God for help from the angels but praying directly to an angel is not what I would expect from a Christian book. However, Madame Raphael does speak about The Companion... Who is he? We don't know just yet with this book but the author does introduce the possibility of a third book at the end. As a parent, I think it is important to know what our children are reading so we can guide them when we found something not theologically correct. In this case, I would explain the importance to pray directly to God and remind them that this is a fiction.
