Seven years ago, Nancy Harmon was forced to go through the horrendous pain of having to sit in a courtroom, with tension so thick you could just cut it with a whetted knife, while her distraught husband Carl, the angry District Attorney, and Rob Legler---someone she had formerly called something of a friend---cruelly condemned her to the false charges against her, saying that she had brutally murdered her two young children, Peter and Lisa, suffocating them by shoving plastic bags over their heads. An acquittal was not very likely at all in Nancy's hopes, or her lawyer's. But suddenly, after Carl commits suicide and Rob Legler mysteriously disappears, the District Attorney is forced to drop the conviction of execution to the gas chamber against Nancy.

Nancy has cut her beautiful waist-length naturally red hair, and dyed it brown, and has moved away from California, hoping the move will help wash away all the horrible memories she had there, ever since she left Ohio and her now deceased mother, Priscilla, to go to college in California. Desperately hoping that no one will still recognize her from the newspaper in the tranquil seclusion of Cape Cod, Nancy quickly moves in, and the handsome realtor who shows her the place, Ray Eldredge, she soon marries.

Now, with Ray, Nancy has two more beloved little children, Missy and Michael, and their lives together as a family is relatively normal, though Ray often finds himself selfishly wishing that Nancy would go out more and be more social with the other Cape Cod residents in this secluded area. But one day, Nancy lets Missy and Michael outside to play before school, and when she goes to check up on them, she only finds a single red mitten of Missy's, and she silently realizes that her horrifically vivid nightmares are starting all over again...

In her debut classic originally published in 1975 by Simon & Schuster, Mary Higgins Clark, with her renowned title of "The Queen of Suspense," has woven a suspenseful tale of sickening crime against children, and how one woman wrongly accused finds herself lost once again in the nightmare she hoped would never come true. The large cast of characters are either likable or unlikable, depending on whether or not they may be villain or hero, and all are extremely realistic. If anything, Mary Higgins Clark's two major writing talents are her abilities to create wonderfully intricate plots, and to develop very realistic characters. This is the classic novel that has inspired Mary Higgins Clark's thousands and thousands of fans across the globe.
