From Amazon.com

Setting aside his wildly popular Forgotten Realms books for the moment, Bob Salvatore continues to wade into his character-development-heavy Demon Wars saga with this meaty kickoff to the latest DW series. If you're familiar with the series (and if you're not, start with The Demon Awakens), you know that this ain't Icewind Dale. The generously developed characters take center stage, and they--much to our initial dismay, perhaps--are far from invincible. (More than a few hearts were broken when Elbryan the Nightbird, Touel'alfar-trained ranger extraordinaire, bit the dust in the last book, Demon Apostle.)

Mortalis shifts the spotlight to fearsome gemstone-wielder Jilseponie (a.k.a. Pony), who's got to decide just what path to take in the wake of Markwart/Bestesbulzibar's defeat and the death of her beloved ranger hubby. Should she take over the Abellican church as Mother Abbess? Or should she take King Danube's offer to be Baroness of Palmaris? Or perhaps her grief-tinged destiny lies along another path. Countless goblins still require a firm beating down, the ranks of the Abellicans are far from content, and a virulent plague threatens to kill off even more characters. What's a Pony to do? --Paul Hughes --Ce texte provient de la Hardcover édition.

From Publishers Weekly

This hefty fantasy by bestselling author Salvatore (The Witch's Daughter), which launches a new Demon Wars saga, finds the beautiful and powerful gemstone-mage, Pony, grieving for her lost husband, Elbryan. She also faces a major decision: to become mother abbess of the Abellican Church, or to accept King Danube's offer to make her a baroness and secular ruler? Pony agonizes over whether to stand with the church and fight its corruption or to help the king restore order to a shattered kingdom; she opts to travel to her homeland to ponder. Thus, with no demons to kill, the saga starts off detailing the power struggle between church and state. There is a new enemy to defeat in the land of Corona, howeverDa goblin-spread plague that is the deadly legacy of Bestesbulzibar, the evil "demon dactyl" who has already been killed off three times (once in each volume of the first Demon Wars trilogy). Filled with far more angst than action, this volume still contains enough adventure (including, finally, a magical battle against a tigerish monster) to keep it moving at a happy pace. But for fans looking to vicariously shed the blood of evil goblins, fomorians (giants) and powries (dwarves), this may not be enough. And readers with a more mature perspective might find greater enjoyment and similar conflicts in any well-written medieval history. 6-city author tour.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Mortalis....Masterpiece, Mars 28 2004
This review is from: Mortalis (Mass Market Paperback)
Mortalis is an amazing book.

Enthralling, enchanting, spell-binding...

Awesome.

Those descriptions all certainly apply to this masterpiece, but none of them are sufficient. This is a book that must be read, must be experienced, in order to truly be appreciated.

I am a longtime fan of R. A. Salvatore. I was there at the beginning of his career and practically inhaled The Crystal Shard as a kid. And Salvatore has done nothing but get better as time goes by---he is one of only a precious few writers who actually improves from book to book.

Mortalis is a grand achievement, as is the Second DemonWars Trilogy that follows it and the original DemonWars trilogy that precedes it, truly one of the all-time greatest epics in the fantasy genre.

Perhaps the greatest strength of Salvatore's writing in general, and especially in the DemonWars series, is his ability to create characters that come to life for the reader, characters readers can actually care about as if they were real, alive and breathing, and standing right beside you. Salvatore's characters are not stereotypes. His heroes are not perfect---they are only humans, after all, struggling to do the best they can---and his villains are complicated, often shaded in gray rather than utter darkness. Salvatore gives his characters compelling reasons for their actions and deeply explores the motivations of all his characters. This exploration makes for a much richer and more rewarding reading experience than one generally finds in most typical fantasy novels or novels of any other genre, for that matter.

Over the years, Salvatore has been often and justly praised for his fast moving battle sequences and all the rousing adventure he injects into his tales and I couldn't agree with that praise more...but it is truly his amazing characters that are the primary draw for me.

I truly don't know what else to say. I was totally absorbed with Mortalis and disliked only one thing about about this amazing book---the fact that it ended.

Thank God there were three more following it in the series and, hopefully, many more novels set in the world of Corona in the years to come.

As long as R. A. Salvatore keeps writing these amazing tales of supsense, action, adventure, and intrigue and continues to populate these spectacular stories with fascinating, compelling, and complicated characters, I'll keep buying them the minute they hit the shelves.

Take my advice, people...You should buy them, too.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Thank you Mr. Salvatore, Janv. 24 2003

This review is from: Mortalis (Mass Market Paperback)
Mortalis is a wonderful read and helps put closure to the first three books of the demon war saga. After reading this book, I too, like Jilseponie have come to terms with Nightbird's death and look forward to a hopeful future. The intense emotion inspired by this book and the ending of the last are truly a work of art.

The Demon Wars Saga is a must read for fantasy novel fans. The book provides a good "interim" ending until you are ready to delve into the Second Demon War.

This review is from: Mortalis (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of Salvatore's greatest books to date. He truly put his soul into this work , and you truly feel the pain of Jilseponie as she tries to get over Elbryan the Nightbird's death. A lot of loose ends are tied up in this book (although they are opened again in Asendance), and it makes you feel pretty content to see that everything just might work out for the best.
