Product Description

From Library Journal

The demon dactyl awakens in a mountainside cave on Corona populated by elves, goblins, humans, centaurs, and giants. When goblins destroy the village of Dundallis, orphaned Pony and her friend Elbryan survive. Aided by magically powerful gemstones, they fight to defeat the evil dactyl. Recommended for fantasy collections.

From Booklist

Salvatore's new saga opens in a volcano, with a "demon dactyl" awaking and sending out goblins to ravage the peaceful land of Corona. The scourge orphans young Elbryan Wyndon and the maiden Pony, and the two have to flee for their lives. Meanwhile, on a beach far, far away, multicolored gemstones rain down and prove to have enormous potential for both good and evil magic, depending on whose hands they fall into. After many peregrinations, Elbryan and Pony end up guardians of the gemstones, but that is only their first victory. Salvatore lacks the command of language and the humor of some other exploiters of the classic elements of fantasy, yet he lacks nothing in pacing and well-handled battle scenes. Morever, the extra elbow room he gives himself in this stout volume (and its probable successors) allows him to improve his characterization and world building. This is his most ambitious book to date; if it is not superlatively original, it is certainly very readable. Roland Green --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars 6 HOURS OF PLEASURE AND THRILLS TO LISTEN TO!, Aug 5 2008
By Holly (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Demon Awakens (Audio Cassette)
I really enjoyed this 6 hour read from my favorite audio reader - Bill Mumy! 6 hours of complete pleasure. Great storyline as well, and then having Bill read it! What more could you ask for? Bill has done R.A.Savatore proud. He brought this thriller to life! Very enjoyable in all aspects. I now collect all of Bill's readings such as SHOCK ROCK and LOST IN SPACE - THE PROMISED LAND. I can't wait until his next one! A+ for good listen and good performance!

1.0 out of 5 stars Fluently written, but not very smart, May 12 2004
By A Customer
I gave only one star for two reasons. 1. the obvious sexism. 2. The book is not very smart.

Every time the only woman in leading role appears in the book she thinks something about sex. Do I want to have sex with him... Is he thinkin sex when he looks me... Can I be in same room with him alone... The book has many pages describing how the two leading male characters train to be the best fighters. The men are disiplined and they train hard for mental and physical powers. On the other hand there is Jill who can be good fighter but not because of training. She fights because she's angry and hurt. Jill's emotional character can be compared with the horse Symphony also in the book.

The Demon Awakens totally lacks the knowledge of why and how people act and think. This makes the story very simple and shallow. The story is fluently written, and can be entertaining especially if you like things like "The Fast And the Furious".

5.0 out of 5 stars R.A. Salvatores best book(s), May 6 2004
By Nicholas (Colorado Springs, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This is most definately one of the best books I have ever read! This is an epic fantasy where Elbryan and his best friend, and later on his lover Jilesponie, and their friend Avylen battle against the forces of the evil Demon Dactyl Bestesbulzibar, after his armies destroyed his, and hometown killing everyone in the town except them. A must read for all people over thirteen and who can read english, don't forget to read all the other books in the series!
