Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

"Making his fiction debut, 'Sandford,' a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist using a pseudonym his real name is John Camp, has taken a stock suspense plot--a dedicated cop pursuing an ingenious serial killer--and dressed it up into the kind of pulse-quickening, irresistibly readable thriller that many of the genre's best-known authors would be proud to call their own," stated PW.

From Library Journal

Lieutenant Lucas Davenport, highly touted killer detective, invents intricate video games that he sells for cash. Called in to aid the Minneapolis team scrambling to stop a psychopathic serial woman-slayer, Lucas almost meets his match. The self-styled "mad dog" murderer views his rape/stabbings as a game as well, setting up obstacles for the police, carefully selecting his victims, and priding himself on clever moves. Despite his largely deja vu plot, debut novelist Sandford ( also the author of The Fools Run due from Holt in September under the name John Camp; see Prepub Alert, LJ 4/1/89) delivers tense action, chilling excitement, and thrilling suspense. Fast-moving prose and romantic sidelines add a little zest, too. BOMC featured selection.

1.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I spent money on this tripe, May 11 2000
This review is from: Rules Of Prey (Paperback)
So I read all the reviews here and was eagerly looking forward to reading a new author in a genre I enjoy -- thriller/crime.

Wow, was I ever let down.

First of all I found it incredibly hard to like the main character Lucas Davenport, particularly after he is portrayed as having absolutely no scruples -- from planting evidence (he's a cop!) because he can't find any other way to nab the killer, to setting up two women to be the victim of the killer so that he can catch the guy in the act.

What kind of police work IS this? He breaks the law at every turn, and seemingly doesn't have a conscious about doing that, leaving you feeling that his character is very two dimensional -- of little substance.

I know this is supposed to relate some "real life" police activity, but in most thriller books I've read, the main character has at least SOME redeeming qualities.

Lucas Davenport is out for himself. Period. I could find nothing to like about him, and that made the book tedious to read. I suspect that between his womanizing attributes and his tough-guy law-breaking ways, this book is based solely on the author's own fantasies.

Do yourself a favor, skip this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Captivating Read, Jan 3 2006
By Natalie P. (Mississauga, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
John Sandford is another one of my favorite authors. His stories are captivating and keep you up all night. Lucas Davenport is a well thoughtout, interesting and likeable character. As an employee at a major bookstore chain he is definately one of the authors I recommend to customers looking for a good read. This is the first book in his series. I have read all his books and I can't wait for the next to come out. Keep writing and i'll definately keep reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars 1st in a series - very promising, Jun 13 2004
By Simon Crowe (Greenville, SC United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Rules Of Prey (Paperback)
RULES OF PREY introduces Minneapolis cop Lucas Davenport, on the trail of a brutal serial killer known as the "maddog". Davenport, like so many fictional detectives, is a driven lone wolf who's work puts strain on his personal relationships. He's also a creator of elaborate role-playing games and a lover of (many, in this book) women.

The case proceeds through the usual twists and turns, and the maddog (who gets some POV time in the narrative), is a frighteningly capapable adversary. Sandford never resorts to shock or violence, the narrative logic is impeccable, and this is, literally, a page turner. Sandford's been writing a long time, where have I been? I look forward to reading more. Recommended.
