Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

A pair of gifted, award-winning readers make the audio version of Konrath's fourth mystery to feature Lt. Jack Daniels a rare, funny and very exciting listening experience. While Jack (short for Jacqueline) copes with problems in her private life, a really scary terrorist who calls himself the Chemist is literally holding the city of Chicago for ransom, demanding a huge payoff to stop injecting deadly toxins into food, drugs, even children's sandals. Many people have already died, and the Chemist seems to have something even more vicious in mind. Dick Hill catches the slightly edgy but never over-the-top killer perfectly, the kind of ordinary lunatic who might go unnoticed on the street. Susie Breck creates a perfect Jack Daniels by mixing wry wit, drink recipes and growing apprehension to capture just the right taste for mystery connoisseurs.

From AudioFile

Dick Hill and Susie Breck, real-life husband and wife, team up to narrate KonrathÕs fourth mystery featuring Lieutenant Jacqueline ÒJackÓ Daniels of the Chicago PD. A sociopath is growing toxins and planting them in the restaurants and grocery stores of Chicago. Breck is perfect reading the parts of the intelligent but frustrated Jack. Hill, usually a stellar narrator, is not at his best as he delivers the male parts, perhaps because of the saccharine sarcasm of the roles. Nevertheless, DIRTY MARTINI is a hard-to-forget adventure. After the conclusion, Konrath joins Breck and Hill in the studio for an entertaining interview. While Konrath is known for his wittiness, Dirty Martini has a dark tone that will leave the listener both shaken and stirred. This review is from: Dirty Martini (Audio CD)

Have said it before and I'll say it again, If Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, and Rusty Nail are on your favorites list, add one more - Dirty Martini. The fourth in Konrath's series featuring Chicago policewoman J. A. "Jack" Daniels is another thriller laced with laughter and rich in outre characters.

No question that narrators Susie Breck and Dick Hill are on the favorites list of audio book listeners. They're among the best voice performers working today, and they enliven Dirty Martini with perceptive readings delivered with gusto just as they did with Rusty Nail.

Jack faces the toughest challenge of her career with a loony killer on the loose. He calls himself The Chemist. Crazy man? Yes, but smart ? indeed. He's spreading a deadly toxin throughout Chicago - 30 dead so far. And no one has a clue because he's in disguise.

He prepares well for his deadly errands - false moustache, phony shoulder length hair, clip-on body jewelry, even three inch lifts in his shoes. How does he spread his evil in grocery stores, restaurants? With the help of a tube hidden by his long sleeves.

Jack is assigned to the case. As if finding this sociopath isn't enough, her partner wants a transfer and pretty soon Latham, Jack's love interest, is found unconscious on the floor of their apartment after bringing home a sack of toxin loaded take-out. The Chemist is too close for comfort, and Jack knows that better than anyone else.

Now, how do you write a page turner with an ascending body count and work in healthy doses of humor? Whatever the trick is J.A. Konrath knows it well.

Topnotch tale and first-rate narration. Don't miss it!
