From Publishers Weekly

Woods's latest (after Palindrome ) is a slick thriller set in Manhattan's Upper East Side, the stomping ground of Stone Barrington, a well-bred but unpretentious detective who, in a city of several million people, always ends up in the right place at the right time. Late one evening, as Stone trudges home from Elaine's Restaurant, popular TV newscaster Sasha Nijinsky plummets 12 stories from her terrace and lands on a heap of dirt 20 yards away from him--remarkably, still alive. Stone fails to apprehend the person who flees Sasha's penthouse and, after the ambulance carrying her collides with a fire truck, Sasha herself disappears. Despite the fact that no corpse is in evidence, the baffled NYPD eagerly pins a murder rap on Sasha's distraught lesbian lover. Stone refuses to accept his colleagues' pat solution and even maintains that Sasha might have survived thanks to skydiving training and her billowing, parachute-like robe. Bed-hopping TV newspeople, a sexy blonde judge sporting a red dress beneath her robes, a serial killer targeting cabbies and a creepy med-school dropout turned mortician who idolizes Sasha romp through this calculatedly melodramatic crime story all the way to its grisly B-movie finale. 75,000 first printing; $125,000 ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal

The first of the author's novels to feature police detective Stone Barrington, this 1991 thriller finds him in the wrong place at the wrong time and witnessing an accident that turns his life inside out. His investigation leads into some serious weirdness of both the criminal and sexual kind.

3.0étoiles sur 5 easy read, Avril 26 2004
Rating System:
1 star = abysmal; some books deserve to be forgotten
2 star = poor; a total waste of time
3 star = good; worth the effort
4 star = very good; what writing should be
5 star = fantastic; must own it and share it with others

STORY: When off-duty detective Stone Barrington is a witness to body landing at his feet from a several story apartment complex, he is thrust into a mystery of money, jealousy and police politics.

MY FEEDBACK:
1) Woods has a very easy to read style of writing. You can zip through his book in no time

2) Warning: Adult content. Explicit sex, profanity and alternate lifestyles within these pages. Some reader may find this offensive.

3) Biggest complaint I had was how immature I felt the author handled the sex. It was almost like a dirty old man sharing his personal fantasies vs. an author deftly crafting a steamy scene.

4) Stone is a strong, fun character to follow and he is cliché in all the ways that readers like and keep coming back for more.

OVERALL: I think the average person will find this a good read, even though I personally didn't care for the ending much. Its not that I felt the author jipped me or tied things up too nicely, I personally didn't care for the central content of why things happened. I've been told that this is his only book done this way and if I liked his writing then try his other Barrington books. I will do this.

3.0étoiles sur 5 A Light, But Lively Read or "Nothing Dead Here", Déc 27 2003
NEW YORK DEAD is pure entertainment. Quick and fun. Stuart Woods has created an enviable character in Stone Barrington. He always gets the girl...in fact he gets all the girls. Stone is smart, handsome, debonair and he spends alot of time in bed. Even the tragic events in Barrington's life like losing his job or a romance ending are so not tragic that little sympathy is evoked. With a wry sense of humor and very little effort, Stone goes about solving mysteries. Novelist Woods deftly maintains the suspense throughout the story and rewards the reader with surprises at the end. This is a book (and a series) that will appeal to men and women, so long as they are not in the market for gripping, gut-wrenching intensity. - Robert John Estko, the author of the suspense thriller, EVIL, BE GONE (available on amazon.com)

5.0étoiles sur 5 Nice!, Mai 7 2003

There can never be enough detective novels set in NYC for my taste (I could be bias since I live here). After reading this book I can say that I look forward to reading the rest of the Stone Barrington series. This book is very well written and the story was very enjoyable. Of course the most important thing was the the story flowed, the pages kept turning.

To be honest, I'm surprised by all the 4- and 5-star ratings. Despite the stray twist here and there, this book was extremely predictable. Read more
