Product Description

For years, operative James Nash has performed ultra-covert “Black Ops” missions for The Agency, but when he decides to walk away from their dirty work, his corrupt bosses aren’t about to let him go. After Nash is nearly assassinated, Troubleshooters team leader Lawrence Decker launches a skillful deception to neutralize the threat and protect his friend. With the FBI’s help, Decker fakes Nash’s death, then brings him to a safe house with his fiancée, Tess Bailey, to recover from his injuries and strategize their next move.

Only a handful of people know that Nash is still alive – and fellow Troubleshooters Dave Malkoff, Sophia Ghaffari, and receptionist Tracy Shapiro aren’t among them. Believing that Nash is dead and that Decker has begun a romantic relationship with Tess, Sophia settles for second best and begins a love affair with Dave, who has adored her for years. But Tracy puts two and two together, discovering the truth about Nash – much to Decker’s dismay.

As passions flare, Decker struggles to keep his scheme afloat, and to keep Nash alive. But when he finds himself targeted for death, the game turns even more perilous, and Sophia, Tracy, and Dave are swept into the deadly play. Under fire and racing to unmask their relentless adversary, the Troubleshooters know that the closer they get, the greater the risks. But sacrifices and consequences come with the territory. Forced to choose between love and loyalty, they are no longer just solving a crime – they’re fighting for survival.

I beleive this is one of the best books in the Troubleshooters series. It made me laugh, and it made me cry. It was a page turner, and I could not put it down.

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
For years Jimmy Nash had performed ultra-covert missions as a "Ghost" agent. But when Nash quit and walked away, his ruthless bosses refused to let him go. Two months ago the shadowy government agency almost succeeded in killing Nash. His former partner, Lawrence "Deck" Decker, with help from a (very) few number of people, help fake his death to protect him. Now Nash is hidden away in a safe house (more like a fortress) to recover from his critical injuries. With Nash at the safe house is his fiancée, Tess Bailey, FBI Agent Jules Cassidy and his life partner, and Sam Starrett (former SEAL). Other than them, only Deck knows Nash is alive.

Dave Malkoff takes Sophia Ghaffari to see her dying father at a hospital. As Dave is getting the car so they may leave the medical facility, he is stabbed and left for dead. The two have no idea that all their troubles were just beginning, nor that it all has to do with their deceased friend Nash.

Deck goes to Tess and Jimmy's place to find that the receptionist of Troubleshooters Incorporated (T.I.), Tracy Shapiro, has been caring for the place since Nash's death. Tracy lives upstairs. Deck is shocked when he learns that out of all the people and agents from I.T., it is the simple receptionist who has figured out that Nash still breathes. Unable to let her leave the place with that piece of truth in her head, Deck must take Tracy with him as he returns to the safe house. As they begin their journey, Dr. Jo Heissman walks up. No one knows whether the shrink is still with the dark agency or not and no one trusts her one iota. But soon it no longer matters, because everyone becomes marked for removal.

*** THREE STARS! There are a lot of characters mixed in this suspenseful story. If you get busy and have to put the book down for more than about two days, chances are good you will be lost when you return. There is just SO much constantly going on with all the characters that I do not believe there is any way to keep it all straight unless you have lots of time to devote to reading. The author keeps everyone in three groups. Of course, there is the group at the safe house and much drama is happening between the people there. Dave and Sophia are the second group and they are interested in each other, but her horrible past keeps him at bay. Deck and Tracy are the third group. They are also attracted to each other, but it is Deck's problems keeping them apart. All-in-all, this is a good addition to the series, but you better have plenty of reading time if you want to enjoy it. ***

This review is from: Dark of Night: A Novel (Hardcover)
I didn't know what to expect when I picked up this book to read. I have been following the Troubleshooters series and, with the exception of a couple of duds (for me), I have really enjoyed the series.

DON is the end of story arcs that started in Flashpoint which introduced us to Tess, Nash, Decker, Dave and Sophia. The outstanding question going into Dark of Night was who will end up with whom. I am one reader who was glad that I didn't get the expected (based on reader expectations), but rather the unexpected.

Going into the book, I had all these crazy scenarios running around in my head because, for the first time, I read pre- and post-publication spoilers. What I found when I read the book was that the characters were as I remembered them (although a little more fleshed out in some cases).
Sophia is still trying to get to Oz to get a heart, Dave is still trying to find that spine he lost somewhere between Hot Target and ITS (at least where Sophia is concerned), Tracy did not suddenly become "brainy" enough to become Troubleshooters next member of Mensa, and Tracy and Decker are not likely to be found in future books moonlighting at San Diego's local BDSM club.

The book was not without it's flaws. There were some eye-rolling moments and some flow problems, but, all in all, it was a very good read for me. I thought the romances were nicely done and the suspense was relatively fast-paced and no more unbelievable than I've come to expect from romantic suspense novels.
