Product Description

The grim specter of sickness looms over the Weyrs of Pern, felling fire-lizards and posing a potentially devastating threat to their dragon cousins, Pern’s sole defense against the deadly phenomenon that is Thread. Fiona, the youngest and only surviving daughter of Lord Bemin, is just coming of age, and about to assume the duties of a Weyrwoman, when word spreads that dragons have indeed begun succumbing to the new contagion. With the next season of Threadfall quickly approaching, and the already diminished ranks of the dragons once more under siege, every Weyr across Pern is in crisis mode. It is hardly the time for disturbing distractions – such as the strange voice Fiona suddenly hears in her mind at the darkest and most urgent moments.
Circumstances and the mood of the weyrfolk worsen when advance patrols relay the dreaded news that black dust – the unmistakable herald of falling Thread – has been sighted. As more dragons sicken and die, leaving only a new generation of weyrlings too young to succeed them, Weyrleader B’Nik and queen rider Lorana arrive from Benden Weyr to comb Fort Weyr’s archives in a desperate search for clues from the past that may hold the solution to the plague.

But could the actual past itself prove the pathway to salvation for Pern’s stricken dragons and the entire imperiled planet? Guided by a mysterious ally from a wholly unexpected place, and trusting in the unique dragon gift for transcending time, Fiona will join a risky expedition with far-reaching consequences for both Pern’s future and her personal destiny.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dragonheart, Nov 2 2009
By Duncan S. Robertson (Cochrane Alberta) - See all my reviews

I own every book that Anne McCaffrey has ever published including all the kids books and love them and her. Having said that, Todd may be her son but he is not the writer his mother is. (grammar?) Right from the get go there is something unsettling/wrong with the book. Its like hearing a favorite song done by a mediocre cover band. The words are there but the song is just not quite right. Early on in the book, as part of the plot, Todd creates a major problem the protagonists then have to solve. They come up with a plan that will hopefully solve this problem and proceed to implement it. The book ends with the heroine and her associates coming back to the place they started from and although the original problem has not been solved (or even mentioned) the book ends! Talk about being left hanging!!! There is no mention of a sequel and/or this being the 'first in a series', you are just left outside in the rain and everyone else has gone home. I reeeeeaaallly wanted to enjoy this book. Anne is not getting any younger and our best hope to keep Pern alive is certainly her son. Unfortunately he just doesn't make it. I wish him all the best and hope that his next effort will be better but, I can't recommend this book to any Anne McCaffrey fans.

1.0 out of 5 stars Built on fandom and not canon..., Dec 31 2009
By C. S. Sauvé (Northern Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was looking forward to reading this book when it came in the mail despite the disappointing effort entitled "Dragonfire" which Mr. MaCaffrey previously wrote in which he introduced slavery to Pern society.

This time, he plays around with the rules his mother had set forth in previous books but the fans have ignored in Mushes and FanFictions. For example: a Holder/Heir Impresses from the stands; blues are larger than greens; greens blood their kills and have the same problems as gold when they rise (fighting their riders and threatening to go *between* if not controlled); and the Weyrs, who still know about the Ancients, have already forgotten that women once rode greens, but are now willing to suggest that a woman can ride a blue.

Then there is the New Age stuff as well which was first presented in the form of healing stones and such. Now it's psychics...

Suddenly, Igen Weyr has no Dragons in it. There's a sort of handwaving to explain it, but mainly the author appeared to have wanted a way to desmonstrate once again that his characters are cooler than his mother's. (Much as I detest Lessa, the man failed.)

It also seems that the same editor who served his mother for years and strove (and failed) to maintain some sort of consistency within the earlier Pern books and the table of characters is still working for the McCaffreys. Despite the fact that Mr. McCaffrey's books only have a page or two (at most) of characters listed for the reader to reference, there are glaring errors withing it. For example: Tannaz's queen is refered to as both Kalsenth and Kelsanth in the text and Nuella is not listed as the WherMaster.

I would need to reread Dragonblood to be sure, but I'm relatively certain that this book conflicts with some events in that book as well.

As the previous review stated: the book ends suddenly. There are so many plot threads flotting around incomplete that I find them a greater threat to the future of Pern than Thread. After all, we all know that in the 9th Pass, there are still dragonriders, all the five original Weyrs (plus another one or two to the South) and Pern has not been consumed by Thread.

I considered giving this book two-stars, because there's enough characterisation (in parts) to save it from that fate (Barely), but early in the text, the author made another handwave in regard to a scene which the text suggests was a turning point for the main character. Does Mr. McCaffrey present us with the scene and the crucial exchange which transformed the Holder/Heir's thinking into that of a dragonrider? No. He simply has two other characters discuss the confrontation (and in not that much detail either).

Pity. I had hopes for this author after his first few attempts at Pern, but now I'm truly starting to wonder if the series will survive past another book or two from Todd.
