Product Description

Twelve-year-old Eon has been in training for years. His intensive study of Dragon Magic, based on East Asian astrology, involves two kinds of skills: sword-work and magical aptitude. He and his master hope that he will be chosen as a Dragoneye – an apprentice to one of the twelve energy dragons of good fortune.

But Eon has a dangerous secret. He is actually Eona, a sixteen-year-old girl who has been masquerading as a boy for the chance to become a Dragoneye. Females are forbidden to use Dragon Magic; if anyone discovers she has been hiding in plain sight, her death is assured. When Eon’s secret threatens to come to light, she and her allies are plunged into grave danger and a deadly struggle for the Imperial throne.
Eon must find the strength and inner power to battle those who want to take her magic...and her life.

About the Author

Alison Goodman was born in Australia and after a bit of wandering, now lives in her hometown, Melbourne. She was the 1999 D.J. O’Hearn Memorial Fellow at Melbourne University, holds a Master of Arts, and teaches creative writing at postgraduate level.

In a world akin to ancient China, the Empire of the Celestial Dragons rules. Twelve energy dragons and their human partners, the Dragoneye Lords, protect the empire. Well, eleven do  the Mirror Dragon is missing.

Each year, 12 boys compete to become the next Dragoneye Apprentice, but the Dragon will choose just one. No one expects crippled Eon to win, but he has two pivotal secrets. First, he possesses the rare ability to see all of the energy dragons, rather than just one. And second, Eon is a girl.

If Eona is discovered, she will be executed immediately.

And when the Mirror Dragon suddenly reappears, after being absent for centuries, it chooses her.

Why has she been chosen? Will she be able to prevent the chief Dragoneye from overthrowing the Emperor? And what will happen if Eona is discovered, especially now that she has befriended the Emperors son?

This book is fantastic!! It was published in Australia as an adult novel, and can be read by adults or teens. The medieval fantasy is great, and will appeal to fans of Tamora Pierce.

But there are many layers to this story, about self-awareness and power among other things. A fast-paced plot and a hint of romance will keep you turning pages late into the night!

This book was spectacular! I really enjoyed reading it, very addicting. The story takes place in a sort of Asian themed world. Although the world itself is purely created by the author, Goodman did mirror some of the past elements of Asian culture and society, which I thought was a wonderful addition to the overall setting. Beautiful descriptions!

The plot, while steady throughout the novel, seemed to fly by the last quarter or so! There was some predictability, and I was frustrated with Eon/a for not figuring it out earlier when it's so blatantly obvious! For a fairly smart boy/girl, she was considerably dense when it came to this aspect!

Despite my frustrations, it did play out nicely within the plot, and while I became increasingly frustrated in this one element of the story I totally missed the obviousness of another! But perhaps that is what Goodman had planned all along.

The characters were all fascinating and well-developed. My favorites had to be Lady Dela, Ryko, and Chart.

Goodman's writing is filled with rich details! I loved the descriptive elements! Did I mention that already!?

Can I just say that I really had no idea what a eunuch was and not come across as ignorant? I actually learned a thing or two while reading EON: DRAGONEYE REBORN.

My only complaint is the ending - total cliffhanger. I need the next book, like now.
