Product Description

From Kirkus Reviews

``In romance the success of an individual author is not based on how well she writes by conventional standards, but on how compelling she can create her fantasy and on how readers...can step into it with her.'' Thus Amanda Quick, as Jayne Ann Krentz, in her introduction to Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women (1992--not reviewed), an anthology concerning the romantic novel. Here, in the best-selling paperback novelist's debut in hardcover, Quick has provided an inviting little world of warmth, adventure, mystery, bouncy sex, and a (never oppressive) Regency setting. Olympia Wingfield, alone and vaguely raising three lively young nephews, is glad to hire on as tutor one Jared Ryder--who's not about to reveal that he's a viscount. Jared impresses the intellectual ``spinster'' of 25: ``From his long wind-whipped black hair and velvet eyepatch to the dagger he wore...he was an awe- inspiring sight.'' Jared's real mission is to purchase a secret diary purported to point to a West Indian treasure--a diary that the studious Olympia is deciphering, unaware of its import--but, meanwhile, as part of the household, he disciplines the soon-to-be- devoted boys (and their dogs); runs villains to ground; carries on his own shipping business on the sly; and soon, of course, becomes smitten with Olympia. Amid subplots that flutter around and about like Olympia's chemisette, there's also jolly sex--during which both partners have a wonderful time. A featherlight, warmhearted fantasy with lots besides bedroom frolics going on, and it's all in a modern idiom (only one ``mayhap''). Fans will welcome this perfect little popover of a romance into hardcover circulation. (First Printing of 60,000) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. Ingram

Olympia Wingfield's desire to study ancient legends and stories of long-lost treasure is supplanted by desire for Jared Chillhurst, a pirate posing as a tutor who arrives out of the blue to school her three hellion nephews. Reprint. --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Watching paint dry! How disappointing..., Feb 24 2004
This review is from: Deception (Mass Market Paperback)
What a disappointment! I'm usually a fan of Amanda Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz because I love the sizzling relationships between her lead characters. But definitely skip Deception!
The main female character, Olympia, is dim, dull and wimpy. She has no spunk, no fire, no pizazz. She rolls over and lets this stranger enter her life and takeover her family.
The main male character, Jared, is dull, boring and prissy. He leaves you as cold as a lettuce leaf.
Where's the spark, Amanda? Where are the firey debates and heated passionate fights between these two? Where is the female character's resistance? The male character's passion?
I was horrified by this book. It was about as exciting as reading about an affair between a carrot and a tomato!
Here's the basic premise: Dull boring man becomes tutor to dull boring woman's nephews. Dull boring man moves into woman's house and within days is bossing her around giving orders. Dull boring woman accepts orders like a meek mouse. Dull boring man threatens dull boring woman's reputation by taking a holiday to London with her. Dull boring woman spends her whole time running about worrying about HIS reputation. Dull couple marry. Dull couple have maybe 1 or 2 half-hearted squabbles but woman always ends up apologizing while trying to solve some silly clue hidden in a book. Zzzzzz...
This is a rare misfire for this good author. Don't waste your time!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a fun, intelligent little read, Nov 25 2003

This review is from: Deception (Mass Market Paperback)
I am halfway through this book, and I am really impressed. The story is one I don't see often: no shrinking, beautiful virgin with a heart of gold who will be seduced by a vaguely dangerous, but brutally handsome man who needs to be tamed. The heroine is smart, unusual and happy enough with her life when her hero shows up. As a previous reviewer pointed out, there is humor in this book, as well as some passion and a lot of adventure. If you want something different, yet still enjoyable, this would be it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Nice Change, Feb 24 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Deception (Mass Market Paperback)
I've been reading Regency romances on and off for the past two years (I'm a graduate student and they give my brain the break it deserves). It was getting to the point when every time I saw the word "ton," my teeth were set on edge. Like many of the erstwhile characters of romance novels, I was sick of Society!

It was with great relief that I began reading "Deception." A fine book and a fine plot with lots of great sex (in libraries!), but also, as other reviewers have mentioned, a nice family atmosphere thanks to Olympia's nephews. Only one ball, towards the end of the book, and not dwelt on over much. In short, characters that can find plenty to do, even in London, rather than subjecting themselves and the readers to boring and trivial gossip. This is only my second Quick -- I can't believe I waited two years to try her again. One thing is for sure. I won't be making that mistake again any time soon!
