Product Description

Gloria Michelle Samantha Evelyn Henke has always wished her life could have been simpler. After all, she’s a lot of people, with a lot of responsibilities – rear admiral, Countess of Gold Peak, cousin of the Queen, fifth in line for the throne, and best friend of Honor Harrington – and she doesn’t even like politics. At least, though, it hasn’t been as bad for her as for her friend Honor. That’s something.

But things can always change. Which is how someone who’s perfectly happy commanding a simple squadron of battle cruisers finds herself first a prisoner of war, second a high-level interstellar political envoy, third a brand-new vice admiral, and fourth squarely in the path of the storm.

It’s a new universe for Mike Henke – there are deadly threats to her Star Kingdom and everything she loves stirring in the shadows of an interstellar conspiracy vaster than anyone in the Star Kingdom of Manticore has ever even imagined. And all of them are headed straight for her, with consequences which hinge entirely upon her decisions.

For the first time, she, too, finds herself in fleet command, in a situation fit to terrify anyone, even someone who’s been “the Salamander’s” best friend since the Academy. Still, Mike has a tendency to grow into challenges, and the enemies of Manticore who always thought that Honor Harrington by herself was bad enough are about to discover that they haven’t seen bad yet.

But it’s coming.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best Honorverse book but it is a must read, April 17 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Storm from the Shadows (Hardcover)
There isn't much action in this book and it recaps allot of events from War of Honor and Shadow of Saganami, but from different perspectives. Weber admits that in the Authorial note at the begining of the book. Don't read it by the way as some of you might scream in rage as he gives some insight as to where the story might go and how it changed from the his original plot. I won't give it away but if some of you know your naval history you probably thought it was going to happen in the last book but Weber decided to change it. Thank GOD! IMO!
It is a definate must read though as this books is all about setting up the last books in the Honoerverse. Finally there is an end in sight but it might be devestating to all those charaters we love to achieve it. I would call this more a scifi-political novel than a space opera which means it isn't exactly Webers best. I take off 1 to 1-1/2 stars for its long a dreary expositions and the jumping between all the characters (I thought I was reading Wheel of Time for awhile there) but the end is a real cliffhanger that makes it worth it. I REALLY can't wait for the next book now.

Torch of Freedom- comes out in Nov. 09........ :( Not soon enough, but at least it is up for pre-order now.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shocked at the good reviews - ho hum drivel, April 13 2009

This review is from: Storm from the Shadows (Hardcover)
Being a fan of David Weber's series I was delighted to see this in the bookstore. However, as page 400 it is still driveling on about some mushy uninteresting political situation for whole cast of seemingly irrelevant characters. Unfortunately, it is neither intriguing, nor inspiring as his other novels were. Of course there is no action what so ever. Quite frankly I would have to recommend passing on this novel completely. It is shocking that someone would have the nerve to rate this above a 2 on the US site. Hopefully you can avoid my pitfall.
