5.0 out of 5 stars A Spooky Night, a Haunted Castle, A Mystery, and Fun for Cats and Mice, Jan 24 2009

This is the best of the first three books in the Geronimo Stilton series. I think you'll have a great time with this book.

Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House is definitely for intrepid youngsters, such as those who like to visit haunted houses where ghosts and goblins jump out at them on Halloween. If a youngster gets nervous when things go bump in the night, the beginning of this book might get in the way of good sleeping that night.

It was a dark night in October when Geronimo Stilton, the retiring editor of The Rodent's Gazette, was driving through the Dark Forest to visit his aunt Sweetfur who was vacationing in Sweet Paw Hills. The fog rolled in and the paved road ran out. Unexpectedly, Geronimo saw a sign pointing to Cannycat Castle, a place that he couldn't find on his map. Upon arriving at the castle, a lightning bolt shot down from the sky and the rain began to pour. He approached the castle and a light mysterious came on and went off in a tall tower. Geronimo finds it all a little overwhelming. Once inside, things get a lot spookier in a hurry!

In the midst of his terror, Geronimo gets a call from his sister, Thea. She immediately wants to see what's going on and tells him to wait for her. When Thea arrives, she brings jokester cousin Trap with her and their nephew, Benjamin. Trap keeps making fun of Geronimo who is embarrassed that everything spooky he has seen isn't there any more. What happened? Benjamin decides to be a detective and looks for clues.

It's an interesting mystery with a rewarding solution that any child will enjoy. Those who feel brave will feel encouraged to know that many spooky things are caused on purpose, not supernaturally by ghosts and goblins.

As with the other books in the series, the text is enlivened by printing words in bright colors and stimulating shapes that reflect their meaning and the emotions that they suggest. The illustrations are wonderful for bringing the atmosphere to just the right pitch.

I think it would be the most fun to read this in a dark room with only a small candle or some moonlight for illumination.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good mystery for young readers by AC, April 14 2005
By A Customer
On a dark Halloween night Geronimo Stilton is driving when he sees a haunted house in front of him. The lightning is striking everywhere!! Then his car breaks down so he has to go inside. Geronimo is a big scardy mouse. I would highly recommend this for others, because it's a suspenseful book. And it's very funny!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Scary Adventure for Geronimo!, May 24 2004
By A Customer
This book is awesome! Geronimo gets lost in the forest and has to spend the night in a haunted house! Geronimo gets really excited when he finds a library full of books, but he gets scared away by a ghost. The scariest part was when the ghost of Duke Slicepaw came out!

I like the way the book is printed with the words being different colors and styles. It has lots of pictures and maps too. It makes it easier for me to read it. I am going to read all fifty titles as they are translated from Italian to English!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, cheesy, clean fun
Filled with bad puns and cheese references, I am using these "chapter" books to introduce my 4.5 year old to reading more than little kid stories. Read more
