PW noted that this "taut tale," about a boy's addiction to the eponymous game played by the odd trio next door, "will raise readers' hackles and incite nervous laughs." Ages 12-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Allegary for expansion, Oct 13 2005
So, all life forms essentially want the same thing. From single celled organisms, to humans. We want to expand and take over the universe. Why? We're not exactly sure. But a race it is.

Interstella Pig seems to me to be an allegory for this. Delicately woven.

Highlights the pointlessness of the race, along with the necessity of it. If we don't win, who will?

2.0 out of 5 stars This Pig Stinks, May 25 2005
By Kevin (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Interstellar Pig (Paperback)
This book isn't bad. But it isn't good. There are waaaaaayyyy better books out there. The only somewhat good parts of the book is when the game is actually being played--the rest is boring filler--and these moments are way too few. Then things keep getting weirder and weirder, and less and less believable. The ending is poor. This book may be appropriate for someone under eleven years-old.

I enjoy games, and this game was indeed interesting, however, i think Sleator should have designed the game, not the book. I actually found the moments when the game was just a game better than the preposterous final part of the book.

I hated all the characters--didn't love to hate them, just hated them--they really were quite dull and annoying. Barney's 'insanity' was really unconvincing. All attempts at suspense and thrill were void to me.

Thank you, Sleator, now I know what kind of book I don't want to end up writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interstellar Pig: Science Fiction at it's Best, April 25 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Interstellar Pig (Paperback)
Teenage independence-seeking Barney is off on a beachtrip with his parents, when he meets some strange characters who show him their obsession: a board game called Interstellar Pig. He is strangely allured, and soon the game turns into something on a cosmic scale.

This is a very good sci/fi book by William Sleator. The detail and originality only add to the brilliant plot and vivid characters. Sleator once again is able to pull the reader into his crazy world, leading to a very enjoyable novel.
