Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray, by Chris Wooding, is a challenging, complex and utterly intriguing novel that grips with spine-chilling certainty from the very first page.

Set in the dark streets of London after the Vernichtung, a war that left the city and its people damaged and rotten to the core, the enigmatic Alaizabel Cray wanders alone and vulnerable amid the debris. As she wanders through the labyrinth of the Old Quarter, touching people with beauty while holding the key to the evil all around, Alaizabel crosses the thresholds of the souls that lurk in the darkness...

This is a stunning and unforgettable novel, rich in imagination and executed with a touch of unforgettable class. Reminiscent of work by Joan Aiken and Philip Pullman, there is also an extra dash of pure horror that will send a shiver down the spine, making it a great read for even the most reluctant reader. (Ages 11 and over) --Susan Harrison --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up–Jack the Ripper meets the supernatural in this Bosch-like horror tale set in an alternate Victorian London where supernatural "wych-kin" lurk around every corner waiting to prey on humans. Hot on the trail of a vampirelike "Cradlejack," 17-year-old wych-hunter Thaniel stumbles upon beautiful Alaizabel Cray, who unknowingly has been possessed by an "old wych" named Thatch. Determined to rescue Alaizabel from Thatch and the sinister cult responsible for depositing the evil spirit in Alaizabel's body, the innately chivalrous Thaniel slashes and burns his way through a nightmarish city crawling with enough ghastly human and supernatural villains to stock a wax museum. Eerie and exhilarating, this book marks a thematic and stylistic departure from Wooding's earlier, more contemporary teen novels of partying, drug addiction, and pyromania. Instead, he fuses together his best storytelling skills–plotting, atmosphere, shock value–to create a fabulously horrific and ultimately timeless underworld where heroes battle menacing foes to save the world from demonic overthrow.–Hillias J. 3.0 out of 5 stars Haunting of Alaizabel Cray, May 20 2008
By Pauline - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
The "Haunting of Alaizabel Cray" is a page turner of a book and I believe teens will read it in one sitting. The book is dark and gruesome and violent. There is no sex and the language is clean, but there is violence and a serial killer and of course the mutilated victims.

The characters are real enough, but I did not become overly attached to any of them. Thaniel is an interesting seventeen year old whose occupation is to hunt wych-kin and on a hunt he comes upon Alaizabel who is in desperate need of his help. In a series of events they eventually save London from the "dark side" with the help of numerous other characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, Jul 31 2004
By A Customer
"The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray" is one of those books you will have difficulty putting down once you get started. The author pulls you into a London thats not exactly London inhabited by strange creatures and the wych hunters who hunt them. Its a dark, creepy and deliciously atmospheric novel filled with memorable and charismatic characters. Read this book, you won't regret it.
