About the Author

The first 100 plus pages of this book is a right wing rant on the health care debate and the alleged foibles of the political left. There is then a decent military campaign type novel in the middle and a rant at the end.

Ringo does excellent work when paired with another such as David Weber. He can do very good work on his own but this book, sadly, was not one of them.

Great science fiction invites the reader to think about the great moral and ethical quandaries of our time in the context of a mythical, futuristic or apocalyptic backdrop.

The Last Centurion is not great science fiction... nor is it middling action adventure... it is a bad episode of fox and friends masquerading as a novel, a pathetic collection of Hannity rants wrapped up in the addled bumbling of Limbaugh and the america right or wrong frothing of Dobbs... it is laughably stupid.

Here is the formula for the novel, and I am sorry I am not kidding:

1)Take any political issue...
2)Ask yourself what Rush/Hannity/O'Reilly/Dobbs would say...
3)That answer saves people from the plague!

Then:

1) Take the same political issue
2) Ask yourself what Clinton, Obama, or any educated person would say
3) That answer kills millions of stupid liberal elites from the plague

Sprinkle in a heavy dose of sexist male chauvinism, poorly concealed racism, open ethnocentrism and ignorant bigotry and repeat.

For example:
Health care - private for profit health care saves people from the plague... socialized medicine kills people from the plague

Christian charity saves people from the plague... Government incompetence kills people from the plague

Immigration - illegal chinese and mexican immigrants bring the plague to america... an america that should have known better and is being punished for not building fences

Sexual orientation - homosexuality kills people from the plague... good christian morals saves people from the plague

Farming - organic farming kills lazy stupid hippies... good ole fashioned mega corp gen mod food saves people from the plague

Red states save people from the plague... blue states kill people from the plague.

and on and on and on... at some point the "plot" requires the "blogger" to excuse the Bush administration for the Katrina response while at the same time attacking the people abandoned in New Orleans as fat lazy and selfish...

It is one painfully tedious ideological lecture after another about how right wing, extremist American conservatives are right and the rest of the world is stupid and dead from the plague...

$10 I will never see again.

This novel is very much about the American Right Wing's growing moral outrage and bunker mentality in response to an increasingly polarized American political arena. This book is very a mirror of current extreme right wing view of total rectitude, where the left can do no right and the right can do no wrong. Which is a far sight from Ringo's nuanced work in a Hymn Before battle where both sides of the political spectrum were shown to be as able of incompetence as well as of competence.

This book is very much a rant as well as one might say wishful thinking as much as someone can apply the term to a disaster novel. In spite of the horribly one-sided and obtuse viewpoint; the book in itself is very accessible and easy to read. There were a lot of times where I wondered how much better this book would have been with proper editing.

In the end, the book was very disappointing. It felt like being inside a Fox News anchor's head and its not a very pleasant place to be. In the end I only finished the book expecting something to improve. But in the end, there is very little to write home about in this novel.

Sadly this book is about par for the course since Ghost came out.
