Product Description

The Alliance has been fighting a losing battle against the Syndicate Worlds for over a century. Now, Captain John "Black Jack" Geary, who returned to the fleet after a hundred-year suspended animation, must keep the Alliance one step ahead of its merciless foe.

After a series of deadly engagements, the Alliance fleet is severely damaged and its arsenal is running low. Forced to halt in the Baldur Star System to raid the Syndic mines for raw materials, Geary is anxious to get moving again. But what should the fleet's next move be? The Syndics are starting to catch on to Geary's tactics, and as the Alliance ships jump from system to system, it's getting harder to keep one step ahead.

What's more, Geary has started to piece fragments of intelligence together into a highly disturbing picture: the Syndics have been keeping the existence of another potential player in the war a secret - and this unknown power may have the means to annihilate the human race.

About the Author

"Jack Campbell" is the pseudonym for John G. Hemry, a retired Naval officer (and graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis). As Jack Campbell, he writes The Lost Fleet series of military science fiction novels. He lives with his family in Maryland.

The more I read, and the more I think that the lost fleet should have been a three book series. Book 1 & 2 together, 3 & 4 likewise. There just isn't enough material to constantly keep coming out with a book so we're served re-warmed writing in the first quarter of the novel until we get to the good parts. The interpersonal relationships are well thought out and very well written, the space battles and tactics are top notch. Much of the technologies are pretty standard sci-fi fare, yet they carry a tang of believeability which is primordial for the military sci-fi genre.

Overall its a really good read...but one I can't help but feel that I've mostly had before. I don't feel like I should have to pay twice or wait six months to read a whole book. The quality is definitely there, but there should be more to the books, and its the lack of a complete arc that to me seperates this novel from a five star review.
