From Publishers Weekly

The serene snow country suddenly turns deadly for Anna Pigeon in Barr's riveting 12th novel to feature the intrepid National Park Service ranger (after 2003's Flashback). On assignment to locate four young park employees who went missing in a fierce storm, the 50ish Anna is working undercover as a waitress at Yosemite's Ahwahnee Hotel, where she must deal not only with an exacting supervisor and a surly head chef but also share a dorm with 20-something roommates. Evoking the stunning beauty of the park in winter, Barr contrasts the relative safety of Yosemite Valley with the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains into which Anna treks in search of the missing kids. Danger crackles like ice on the frozen lake where she finds a partially submerged plane loaded with drugs. Attacked by vicious poachers, Anna flees into the absolute, terrifying darkness for an ordeal that will keep readers eagerly turning the pages. So well done is this nail-biting sequence that the resolution can come only as something of a letdown. Barr has a true gift for outdoor writing, using the lush snow as natural cover for the violent life in the wild as well as among the park's human custodians. Anyone contemplating a nice winter hike will think twice after entering the wilderness with Anna, but her fans always come back for more.

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School–A fast-moving, action-packed, gory mystery-adventure. On loan to the staff in Yosemite National Park, Ranger Anna Pigeon goes undercover as a waitress to determine why four young staff members have disappeared without a trace. Readers will smile at her challenge to live in a dorm with messy, teenage, party-loving roommates. Her clues take her on an overnight hike where she comes face to face with foulmouthed villains, and it becomes a fight for survival of the fittest against both man and nature. As Anna reviews her clues and ponders her next moves, Barr effectively summarizes the story for readers. Descriptions of the park scenery add to the enjoyment of the mystery. Although more vicious than the others in the series, this is a must purchase for Anna's fans.–Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA

5.0étoiles sur 5 HIGH DRAMA IN THE HIGH SIERRAS, Juil 8 2004

This review is from: High Country (Hardcover)
When Ranger Anna Pigeon goes undercover as a waittress to investigate the disappearance of four young hikers fate serves up a plate of trouble:four men illegally squatting in a missing hikers cabin, her two roommates apparently poisoned, and a hypodermic needle filled with blood hidden in her sleeve. Her first clue to the mystery is in a letter from one of the missing campers, Trish Spencer, that a gold mine, figuratively speaking, may have been discovered in the mountains.
Working through the recipient of the letter ,Dickie Cauliff,Anna discovers that Dickie may have supplied dope to Trish and Trish is a small time dealer ready to make a big score. But what of the men squatting illegally in missing campers Dixon Crofters cabin?Anna discovers that the men are after the cargo of a downed airplane. What is the cargo worth killing over? The men want Anna dead and set off in a spellbinding search for her over the beautiful but dangerous terrain of a Sierra winter.Piece by piece Anna is drawn into a deadly game of hide and seek involving murder , greed , treachery, and ultimately Annas own survival.Maybe the answer lies with Annas co_workers Scott, Jim and a tyrannical head waitress named Tiny. With danger lurking in every nook and cranny of the mountain range Anna pursues a solution.
Written with the pulse of the Sierras beating beneath the surface,High Country is a tale of danger and mystery gauranteed to keep the reader on the edge of a psychological cliff.Nevada Barr invites the reader to look into the abyss of good and evil lurking in the soul of all men and woman.High Country provides an adrenalin rush as powerful , surprising and thrilling as scaling a mountain peak. A must read for any true mystery lover.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Low Country, Maybe, Jui 30 2004

This review is from: High Country (Hardcover)
This book is just plain awful. I love Yosemite and my son works at the Ahwahnee restaurant, so I bought this book hoping for a connection to the story. What a waste of time. I am not even sure Ms. Barr has been to Yosemite. Her descriptions of the park were so generic they could have come right out of Fodors.
There is nothing compelling about this story, the characters are cardboard cut-outs, Anna Pigeon herself is distracting the way she continually has little mental asides that have nothing to do with the story. If this book is indicative of the rest of the Anna Pigeon series then the praise I have been reading in other reviews is misplaced.
Nevada Barr missed some wonderful opportunities to include all of the truly majestic features of Yosemite in her story and instead we get drivel. What a disappointment.

This review is from: High Country (Hardcover)
I have read everyone of Nevada Barr's book And they have been wondrful but High Country wasn't. It took forever to get going & then when it did half of what Anna goes through is so unbelieveable. I did finish the book and it was ok but not up to par.
