Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. In this triumphant return to the universe of The Iron Dragon's Daughter (1994), Hugo-winner Swanwick introduces Will le Fey, an orphan of uncertain parentage. After defeating an evil mechanical war dragon who has enslaved him and his village, Will finds himself displaced by war, first imprisoned in an internment camp and then transported to the many-miles-high city of Babel. On the way, he falls in with Esme, an immortal child with no memory, and Nat Whilk, a donkey-eared confidence man of superhuman abilities. Fusing high technology seamlessly with magic, Swanwick introduces us to a wide range of marvelous conceits, fascinating digressions and sparkling characters. His language bounces effortlessly back and forth between the high diction of elfland and thieves' argot to create a heady literary stew. This is modern fantasy at its finest and should hold great appeal for fans of Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys or China Miéville's novels. (Jan.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Steampunk fairies, elves and demons, Jun 14 2009

This was a very interesting book, though it took me a little while to get into it. Swanwick clearly did his research as nearly every mythological creature from every culture was mentioned at least once in the book, from Japanese Oni to Carbuncles. : D If you like fantasy and steampunk, its definitely a good read, and extremely unique.

3.0 out of 5 stars Convoluted, Dec 18 2008

The world swanwick has created is very interesting, but nearly inpossible to get a firm picture of in your mind. Too many times is somthing mentioned off handedly that destroys the image you had of that scene, and makes you think, what the hell does that look like? Confusing world aside though, the book is an interesting enough read. It follows the character will as he travels the world and does stuff. That's pretty much it. As far as i can tell, it's more a collection of short stories peiced together, which will travels through. I found myself following a story arc, interested in it. then, within a page, i was reading a completely different story which lasted for a large part of the book, and then it goes back to the first story. This happens throughout the book. And on this epic journey of events, the character will does not change or grow, he just trudges along learning things and doing stuff.

The benefit of all this is that you don't know what's going to happen next, and since i could care less about all the characters, the writer can do anything to them and i wouldn't be dissapointed. If your looking for a solid story, with an interested plot and well developed charaters, this is not the book for you. If you want to journey to a world that you can barely make sense of and follow a boy as he does random things, then this is your book. Despite the negative it is still very well written. neither good ynor bad, it's just a matter of taste.
