Rula Lenska appeared on American TV in the '80s, making famous the line--"Don't hate me because I'm beautiful." After that it was hard to take her seriously. But one must in this reading because she is superb. She sweeps one off one's feet like the tidal wave that hits the island of Halemni, where Olivia lives with her Greek family. As the wave subsides and the devastation is uncovered, a woman appears on the street. She carries nothing, and Olivia gives her shelter in the potter's house. Rosie Thomas has written a humane story, and Lenska takes the story to new heights with her magnificent application of Greek dialect, understanding of human emotions, and love of these characters.
