Product Description

An off-duty cop witnesses a double murder outside a Dublin nightclub in the 1980s, and faces an ultimatum from the vicious crime boss behind the killings. Inveigling his way into the cold file on the detective’s death, Minogue is confronted by someone who brazenly tries to gun him down on a busy Dublin street. The past certainly doesn’t appear to be over.

I think I have read all the Matt Minogue cycle of Dublin police procedurals, and the latest in this strong series will be worth your while too.
It's a series,which,like the Michael Connelly-Harry Bosch novels, really ought to be read chronologically.However, in Islandbridge, Matt is almost an onlooker, as events involving the death of a Garda officer in 1983 at the hands of a underworld kingpin, reverberate into the present, impacting especially upon Matt's retired pal, and former superior, Jim Kilmartin.
Brady also ruminates on the effect on Irish society of the island's overheated economy, the so-called "Celtic Tiger", touching on such issues as police corruption, and the plight of young European women seeking a better life, but who end up as indentured prostitutes.
The denouement and final paragraphs may leave you scratching your head a bit, but could also leave you salivating for the next
Minogue outing.

The Globe had this amongst the top 10 crime books in 2005, and I am left wondering why. Perhaps it is because this is the first book in the Minogue series that I have read? Overall, I just found the plot was dull, there wasn't much excitement and I found the entire premise unsatisfying. I just hate books where you read an entire chapter and conclude that it was largely unnecessary and doesn't particularly leave you wanting more.
