Product Description

Halfaglass, aka James Nevison and Kenji Hodgson, was formed in response to the realization that no one was "talking wine" to twenty-somethings in a way that seemed relevant to their lifestyles. To create this book, James and Kenji travelled the globe, tasted copious amounts of wine, and researched and interviewed endlessly. The result is an upbeat guide to wine filled with entertaining stories and information on essential topics such as grape varietals, winemaking, and wine regions. Have a Glass sheds the complicated terminology and pretensions that have alienated younger wine drinkers, and helps readers to better understand and enjoy wine.

With anecdotes and attitude, this book explores the mythology and history of wine from the Old World to the New, from Champagne to Chardonnay, and from Merlot to Muscadet. Throughout, the focus is on using wine to create and enhance an experience, whether it is finding the perfect wine to accompany a meal or ordering with confidence in a restaurant. For those new to wine, and those who want to know the latest trends in wine, Have a Glass is essential reading.

About the Author

Kenji Hodgson's father first sparked his interest in wine, and Kenji's ensuing passion for the grape has prompted many pursuits, including an epic, endurance-testing two weeks at the 2002 harvest in Pouilly-Fuissé, France. He has an Advanced Certificate from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust of London and admits to "a soft spot for wines of the Old World, despite my contemporary disposition."

James Nevison found "The Good Life"--as defined by the harmonious union of wine, food, and friends-while living in Barcelona, Spain. After studying commerce at the University of British Columbia, he gained certification from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust of London. His subsequent wayfaring has taken him around the world to taste the wine of six wine-producing continents.

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last, Jan 9 2004
By Bill Main (Vancouver, BC, Canada) - See all my reviews
As an amateur wine maker - press, barrels, fancy filter, etc. - for the past 30 years, I've always found wine books precious and pretentious. After all, 90% of the world's wines are drunk in the first year they are made, so all this fussiness, this "barnyard with a hint of mellon," this "89 points" has struck me as stetching things. That is, until I read this book. I bought it because I wondered what two youngsters might have to teach a very old codger what to think about something that mattered to him, the qualities of wine. Well, the truth is, quite a lot. I loved their enthusiasm and their down-to-earth knowledge. That's the surprising thing - they know a lot, and are clear and compelling about what they know, without being ARCH or supercillious. I can't think of a better book to give budding wine drinkers - it's approachable, interesting, and detailed enough to be consulted well after the person you have gifted knows the difference between an ordinary burgundy and one which needs to be opened to a cascade of trumpets. It's even a good choice for an old wine-codger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a wine book that has it all for us novices!, Nov 4 2003
By SCOTT NEVISON (Palmdale, CA United States) - See all my reviews
The authors did a great job giving me the information that I felt I needed to choose proper wines. And I learned a lot about how wines differ, not only by the varity of grapes, but by the location of the vineyards.

The authors are humerous and knowledgable about all aspects of wine. It was not only a great read, but a book I will keep handy for future reference.

I plan on giving this book to many of my friends for Christmas.

By Tina Louie (London, England) - See all my reviews
This wonderfully witty and well-written book has been enjoyed by me and my friends from around the world - including Canadians and Americans to Australians and South Africans. We all learned and laughed from reading James and Kenji's experiences - which goes to show that this book has hit on a common thread in all of us - wanting to taste good wine and to enjoy The Good Life.
