From Booklist

This latest entry in the Chicken Soup series is targeted at the newly brokenhearted: those who've recently experienced the death of a beloved friend or family member and are still reeling from the experience. It's a collection of stories by authors who have lost loved ones, and in their stories, they detail the particular death, the aftermath, and how they dealt with their overwhelming grief and found the courage to live again. This collection is very sad, bordering on the maudlin, and while it's not clear whether the stories will make anyone feel better (they may actually cause mild depression), some readers may find comfort here. Divided into chapters with titles such as "Final Gifts," "The Power of Support," and "Living Again," the stories emphasize the universality and commonness of death, which may be something of a panacea. In any case, this series is hugely popular, and librarians should stock up. Kathleen Hughes

Product Description

This collection of inspirational stories will undoubtedly touch many hearts. Written by authors who have lost loved ones, these stories offer comfort, peace and understanding to those going through the grieving process. Individual people deal with grief in their own ways and within their own time, but the guidance and support they receive from others is what helps them through it. One of the key messages of Chicken Soup for the Grieving Soul is that togetherness and sharing are the keys to moving on. In these stories people share their experiences with coping and they share deep memories. Each one has found that putting thoughts and feelings into words is not only cathartic, it allows them to reconnect with their loved one and others. Words of encouragement are plentiful in this edition and they go straight to the heart. Chapters encompass the complete grieving experience and include: Final Gifts, the Power of Support, Coping and Healing, Those We Will Miss, Special Moments, Insights and Lessons, and Living Again. Readers will be comforted and inspired by the stories of regaining strength and hope, such as holding meaningful services, performing thoughtful deeds and cherishing special memories. Most important, just as the writers have come to appreciate life through the grieving process, readers will discover how to do the same. This soothing bowl of stories is the perfect gift to bring comfort, strength and courage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup, Mar 6 2003
By A Customer
Once again Canfield and Hansen have produced a thought provoking book. Death and loss is never an easy subject and anyone experiencing loss will see that they are not alone in their feelings.
I would also recommend the following items for those wishing to find comfort and a way to work through their grief.
1. Healing Stories of Grief and Faith, From Denial and Despair to Comfort and Peace
2. Write From Your Heart, A Healing Grief Journal
3. And for children a video, After the Tears, A Gentle Guide to Help Children Understand Death.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gentle Help for People in Pain (and those who care for them), Aug 23 2003
By Timothy Kearney (Hull, MA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been a big fan of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books since the first book in the series was published. Overall I have found the books to be both uplifting and helpful, and now that the books are published for specific audiences, I have found the books to be jammed packed with great stories. Many of the books do lift the human spirit and are quite useful to people in ministry, teachers, and other people in human service professions. I believe that this volume will be especially helpful to people who have to work with people who have experienced a loss or friends who are trying to comfort someone in pain. Judging from another reviewer, people experiencing loss have also found comfort with the stories in the book.

I have not read the stories in this book while grieving the loss of a loved one. I have read the stories at moments when I have had to help grieving people. I have found that the stories give me a perspective that helps me reach out to those who are experiencing a loss. This is not a book that contains the "right thing to say." More often than not, presence speaks louder than words, and the stories can help us be present to people who are experiencing a loss.
