This first volume of The Balkan Trilogy follows the events in Rumania just before and during World War II through the eyes of Harriet Pringle. A newcomer to Bucharest, and just married to an Englishman teaching at the University, she is in a position to meet and observe people from all walks of life in this strange new world. The Great Fortune is competently and professionally read by Harriet Walter, with good pacing and expression. This is a workmanlike production, of interest mostly because of the setting in the Balkans. J.D.P. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
Product Description
Guy and Harriet Pringle, newly married, arrive in Bucharest in the autumn of 1939. The city they find is one of contrasts and rumours, on the edge with wavering loyalties and the tension of war, peopled with an international cast of characters, including the inimitable and eccentric Russian émigré Prince Yakimov.
