Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

In this romantic thriller, a female janitor cleaning a funeral home is abducted by a man she'd thought was dead.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

From Library Journal

Summer McAfee is a former lingerie model who now makes ends meet as a janitor in her hometown of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. While cleaning at a local funeral parlor, she's suddenly taken hostage by Steve, a man she thought was dead, and taken on a thrilling, violent adventure. Unfortunately, neither Summer nor Steve are particularly appealing characters to begin with, and the Southern accents reader Sharon Williams bestows on them do not create romantic images. While Williams excels in the narrative portions of the text, her dialog renditions leave much to be desired. Williams's Summer is constantly in whine mode with a backwoods drawl, and Steve is not clearly distinguished. Additionally, nothing in this gritty, violent story gives credence to the romance that sprouts between Summer and Steve. Robards (Maggy's Child, LJ 2/1/94) is a popular author, and there may be some demand for this unabridged recording. Otherwise, most public libraries can pass on this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Flat ending..., Jul 6 2004
By Blaine Greenfield "eclectic reader" (Belle Meade, NJ) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Heard the taped version of WALKING AFTER MIDNIGHT by Karen Robards . . . it is a romantic suspense thriller about a
female entrepreneur, 36, who heads her own janitorial business . . . as such, the story opens with her cleaning the local funeral parlor . . . she is startled to find herself taken hostage by a man she thought was a corpse . . . there's a good deal of action, as well as romance, and my interest was maintained until just before the ending . . . that left me flat and, consequently, I wouldn't recommend the book for that reason . . . furthermore, I have problems with stories whose
basic premise is that people will fall madly in love with their captors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Mar 12 2004
By Elizabeth "lking173" (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I must admit I am a big time Karen Robards fan and I have enjoyed almost all of her novels. Her stories are contemporary romances involving a strong heroine, and an equally strong hero usually thrown together with impossible odds. What makes Ms. Robards' stories stand out, is the quality of her characters. Not every heroine has to be model beautiful, nor does every hero have to be 6'4", dark and handsome. Her characters tend to be every day people. This story is no different.

Summer is a former lingerie model who has hit hard times. She is in her late 30s, and her rich husband has left her. Since that time she has been struggling to start her life over and to begin a business. Sunny is the owner of Daisy French cleaning services. One night her employees do not show up, and Summer has to clean the mortuary of one of her biggest clients. While cleaning, she sees a naked body on the embalming today. At one point she thinks she sees the body move, but she is not sure. She is afraid of leaving someone alive just lying on a table and decides to check. At that instant, Summer meets Steve, a man who has been badly beaten and left for dead. Steve wakes up beaten and naked and thinking Summer is working with the guys trying to kill him, he grabs her and forces her to go on the run with him.

The story picks up from there, with Summer, Steve and Summer's mom's dog "Muffy" in tow. They must stay on the run and try to stay one step ahead of Steve's would be killers. I would highly recommend this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of many outstanding books by her, Oct 5 2003
By A Customer
I loved this book. It was funny. Actually made me laugh outloud. Along with the suspence. Had me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. Love how she made the good guy out to be the bad guy in the beginning. Had me wondering about him. Just unbelieveable. I will most definitely try to read all of her books. She is a great author one of the best on my books. This book is definitely a must read.
