Product Description

From Amazon.com

Widowed at 16, Sarah Kennedy's marriage left her with a bitter taste for men. Her biggest concern has been for her 15-year-old brother, Connor. But with the dangerous Culpepper Clan nearby, she now worries for herself as well. As if in answer, a badly wounded Case Maxwell is deposited at her door. Accustomed to tending injured hawks, she tends him with care. But Case has far deeper scars than Sarah can see. He seeks revenge against the Culpeppers for reasons he can never forgive or forget, until Sarah teaches him how to love again. A warm, satisfying read. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

Bestselling paperback romance novelist Lowell (Autumn Lover) makes her first foray into hardcover with this smoothly written post-Civil War western romance. Shortly after the death of her parents in a flood, 14-year-old Sarah Kennedy, now responsible for herself and her younger brother, Conner, becomes a mail-order bride, marrying a brutal older man who drinks and demands painful sex. Widowed two years later, she strives to maintain her farm in the Utah wilderness, where she lives with Conner, an outlaw named Ute and an ex-prostitute known as Big Lola. When she meets Case Maxwell, who is hunting down the Culpepper gang for murdering his niece and nephew, Sarah is still quite certain that she hates sex. But after he is shot in her backyard, she can't help surreptitiously peeking at Case's bulging loincloth while she's patching up his handsome, bullet-riddled body. While he finds her equally irresistible, he firmly resists the idea of marriage or children. His desire for revenge against the Culpepper gang is matched by Sarah's quest to find a silver treasure that she knows is buried near her property. Case agrees to help Sarah find the cache, but suddenly there is a crisis when Conner falls into the hands of the vicious Ab Culpepper. Case proves himself a hero, and the finale is a rousing, old-fashioned shoot-'em-up worthy of Louis L'Amour. Though the dialogue is sometimes sappy, Lowell keeps her entertaining story moving briskly. (Nov.) FYI: Lowell also writes SF fantasy under the name Ann Maxwell and, as A.E. Maxwell, she coauthors mystery and suspense novels with her husband, Evan Maxwell.

5.0étoiles sur 5 VERY GOOD ROMANCE!, Mai 23 2004
Par Desirodri (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I LOVED THIS BOOK, "WINTER FIRE". I LOVED HOW SARAH HEALS CASE'S INNER WOUNDS AND TEACHES HIM TO LOVE HER, AND I LOVED THE WAY CASE TEACHES SARAH THAT SEX IS GOOD. SEX IS NOT WHAT SHE EXPERIENCED WITH HER DEAD HUSBAND, HAL KENNEDY. SHE'S HAD SOME BAD EXPERIENCES WITH SEX BUT CASE SHOWS HER THAT SEX CAN BE GOOD AND ENJOYABLE. AND I LOVED THE WAY SARAH CARED SO MUCH FOR HER BROTHER CONNER. IN THE END CASE ADMITS TO LOVING SARAH. ALL IN ALL, IT WAS A GREAT BOOK. MUCH BETTER THAN ITS PREQUEL, "AUTUMN LOVER".

This was the first novel that I read by Elizabeth Lowell and it was well written. The novel not only contained passion and romance it also had an interesting story line. The characters were likable which made for enjoyable reading.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Abusive hero? Yuck........, Déc 18 2002
Par Un client
Sarah and Connor (I kept thinking of the character "Sarah Connor from Terminator 2: Judgement Day) are brother and sister, eking out a living on their ranch, when a violent band of criminals- the Culpeppers- begins threatening surrounding farms, Chase, a bounty-hunter arrives to set things right. During the ensuing struggle with the Culpeppers, Sarah and Chase fall in love. Can Chase overcome his past and admit to loving Sarah?

I feel bad, leaving a negative review in a forum of so many positive reviews, (which usually means I will get negged), but here's the deal.... I didn't like Winter Fire... Mostly because I found the hero Chase to be emotionally abusive.

From the moment Chase is introduced, he bullies Sara, orders her around and complains about how she is caring for her younger brother. There was also one 'love scene'' early in the book where he was making love to Sarah while she was asleep, which was a real turn off for me. Eh....Ummm... Hello? Our heroine is SLEEPING. Yuck... Not exactly hero material!

Second: The author constantly over-used phrases to describe Sara, that it was almost comic: "Rose-Scented" must have been used at least fifty times in the first six chapters alone.

These two factors, greatly reduced my enjoyment of the book.

This story was good enough to keep my interest, but it was definately missing something in the beginning. If I knew what it was, perhaps I'd add another star.
