Product Description

From Amazon.com

Dr. Azor Moses Sparks is an extremely esteemed heart surgeon, a devout fundamentalist Christian, a cyclist, a friend of biker gangs; a friend to all. Until he is found dead in an alley with his chest ripped open, that is. Where does one go to begin in the investigation of a man who had no enemies? Lt. Peter Decker starts with the man's family, which he discovers is large and filled with strife and unstable characters. He also finds some problems in his own affairs, mostly involving religious beliefs--his own, those of his Orthodox Jewish wife and those of a Roman Catholic priest who plays a prominent role in the multilayered thriller. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

Powerful, assured and absorbing, Kellerman's ninth Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus (Sanctuary; Justice) mystery begins with the brutal murder and mutilation of renowned heart surgeon, researcher and fundamentalist Christian Azor Sparks. LAPD Lieutenant Decker gets the call. He also gets an abundance of suspects. First there is Sparks's large family: his wife, Dolores, and six adult children, including triplets (Paul, Luke and Abram, a Catholic priest), and their assorted spouses. Then there are the victim's surgical and research colleagues and his unlikely biking buddies. Religion and morality are integral to Kellerman's mysteries?built on the bedrock of the Deckers' orthodox Judaism. Here she deftly casts her net around the commanding victim, whose shadow lay equally over family and colleagues, and his son, the theologian Father Abram, whose past connection with Rina may force Decker off the case. Human strengths and frailties, decisions made or not made and mistakes overcome or yet to be reckoned with provide the material that Decker must sift through to find the murderer. As his competent staff (Marge Dunn among them) launch their probes in all directions, they uncover a catalogue of motives that may relate to Sparks's murder and to another that follows. Kellerman succeeds brilliantly in making the search for understanding as compelling as the search for the murderer. 100,000 first printing; audio rights to Brilliance.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Pretty Good, Mars 7 2004

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I wanted to give this book 3 1/2 stars. It was good but very slow in starting. I felt like we went all over the place and got to know some characters pretty well while others were pretty much ignored. We find out who did it but I thought it was pretty much ignored in the end.

I did enjoy the relationship between Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus. I even liked the religious aspect of the story. But it was dragged on for way too long.

This was my first novel by Ms Kellerman. I might give another one of her book a try, hoping it will move a bit faster.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Family secrets, Mai 25 2003
Par Karen Potts (Lake Jackson, Texas) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
Dr. Azor Sparks, a prominent heart specialist, is found brutally murdered. Lieutenant Peter Decker is called in on the case and he discovers that the doctor fathered some very dysfunctional children who stood to benefit from their father's life insurance policy. To complicate matters, Dr. Sparks was developing a controversial new drug, and several people had a motive to disrail his research. A third complication is Dr. Sparks' unlikely association with a motorcycle gang with whom he rode on weekends. As always, Faye Kellerman weaves disparate threads into an interesting pattern and intertwines Peter Decker's professional and personal lives. In this book Peter's wife Rina has an unusual connection with one of the murder suspects and this creates some tension between the two of them. This is another winner from Faye Kellerman.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Not as Good as Jonathan Kellerman, Sep 26 2002
Par Un client
This is the first Faye Kellerman book that I read. The mystery and characters were really terrific. It would have been better if story remained about the suspects and the research. I feel it should have been centered in these areas and take out the religious comparisons. I feel it should have been left as Azor Sparks being a religious man who prays with all his patients before their transplant surgery. The Christian and Jewish religions didn't have to be discussed in such depth.
