From Publishers Weekly

At the start of this taut psychological thriller from Trinchieri (The Trouble with a Bad Fit and other mysteries under the names Camilla T. Crespi and Trella Crespi), Emma Perotti, an ESL teacher in Manhattan, enfolds one of her students, An-ling Huang, into her family, despite her husband Tom's distrust of the young Chinese woman. Emma is driven in part by the guilt she feels for the infant daughter she accidentally ran over and killed years before—a secret unknown to Tom, the child's father, and Emma's teenage son, Josh. As the bond between the women grows, Emma's marriage stalls. She moves into a loft with An-ling, but the arrangement sours as Emma prepares to return home and An-ling seduces Josh. When An-ling is found dead, Emma is charged with her murder. Though Emma's sudden obsession with An-ling and the family's final redemption both feel slightly forced, the novel is a gripping, intelligent read. Particularly compelling are its subtle insights into the nature of family, foreignness and the lies we tell ourselves and others even when our intentions are good. (June)

From Booklist

ESL instructor Emma Perotti and her professor husband, Tom, had a near-perfect marriage until the day Emma accidentally struck and killed their two-year-old daughter with her car. Over time, a once-inconsolable Emma learns to navigate her grief. The couple rejoices in the birth of a son, and the future looks, if not bright, at least brighter. One day, a mysterious young artist named An-ling walks into Emma's classroom. The teacher feels an immediate connection with the 19-year-old woman, who seems to harbor deep sadness. (After the early death of her parents, teenager An-ling traded life in rural China for what seemed like a much better future in the States.) Emma develops a complex, emotionally charged friendship with An-ling, and when the young woman is found dead, she finds herself standing trial for her murder. Trinchieri, who has penned seven previous mysteries under the pseudonym Camilla Crespi, deftly interweaves multiple perspectives, from Emma's husband and son to key participants in the trial. The result is a potent psychological thriller about love, longing, and loss. Allison Block

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Narrated from three different perspectives, "The Price of Silence" provides an insider's look into the life of Emma Perotti, who is on trial for the murder of her former student and friend, An-ling Huang. Through flashbacks, courtroom transcripts and emails, readers learn about the complicated relationships between Emma and her husband Tom, her son Josh and ultimately An-ling. There was something wrong with An-ling right from the start which Tom sensed but Emma refused to acknowledge. As Emma grew closer to An-ling, her connection to her husband and son weakened. The story centers around the dangerous consequences of obsession and jealousy, while showing just how far someone will go to hold onto what matters to them.

"The Price of Silence" blew me away. I was captivated right from the start and I literally did not want to put the book down. This book is a perfect combination of all the elements that make up a great psychological thriller. There is so much depth to each of the characters and as the book progresses, another layer of their character is exposed. Though it seems like all the facts are presented at the beginning of the book, nothing is at seems and there were twists and turns that I could not have predicted.

I was also amazed by how the author's writing style shifted between each character's narration. Camilla Trinchieri truly embodied Emma, Tom and Josh as if they really had completely separate identities. I found myself thinking about this story and murder trial as if it were real. Ironicaly, it was An-ling's character that was most real and alive to me, despite her being dead throughout the entire book. Her presence in the book was haunting as she cast such a powerful shadow over the lives of the entire Perotti family.

This impressive book is not to be missed!

5.0étoiles sur 5 Page-Turning, Rich in Insight and Suspense, Moving, Jui 27 2007
This 8th book from NY based Italian American author Camilla Trinchieri (www.camillatrinchieri.com) is turning heads. It'll hook you from the Prologue, grip and carry you through the unexpected over and over, weaving seamlessly in and out of narrators and scenes. Rich in cross-cultural insight, emotionally intelligent. Read the reviews at amazon.com and on the author's website.

Here are some quotes from the book:

Cross-cultural:

--"At night, before going to sleep, she [Chinese] would burn incense sticks and paper money for her ancestors at the altar in the corner - a custom not that different from my [Italian] grandmother's nightly ritual: lighting candles to the statue of the Virgin Mary and to the pictures of her husband and parents propped on the shelf in her bedroom."

--"It's hard to sit in front of strangers and mouth a string of syllables that are senseless and crude compared to the music of one's own langauge. To commit to words that have no past, no resonance."

Insightful:

--"He often accused me of keeping my true self under lock and key, but he too hid pockets of emotion in places I couldn't reach."

--"Mom. She wasn't always there for me. I'd catch her with this look on her face - like she was bored with me. When I was little I kept telling myself she was tired and I'd stop myself from crying."

--"I sometimes think people lie for hope."

Graceful:

--"A smile appeared on Josh's face, like the sudden bright flash of a fish in a pond."

--"... he taught her English words that, with time, became sentences, paragraphs, so many words strung into a long line so that one day she could fly on its end, like a kite in the wind."

--"The mower was gone, replaced by the trill of a mockingbird and the swish of leaves caught in a breeze."

--"If only. The emotions unleashed by those two words could power the greatest storms on earth."

--"Josh cried and I drowned."
