4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but for the Gore..., May 18 2007
By M. Stamler (Stonewall, Manitoba Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Mask (Paperback)
I too delved into the MASK universe because of the Jim Carrey movie. I knew it would be a fair bit more violent than the film, but I had no idea.

I could handle a few blood spurts and broken limbs, but the amount and level of bodily harm (for lack of a better term, since I don't want to overuse 'gore') was really disturbing. Just fair warning to anyone who's reading this with the movie in mind. Be prepared for a difference.

Also the initial animation needs a bit of patience. The first half of this graphic novel isn't the pinnacle of well-drawn, and the lettering for MASK's dialogue starts off as kinda hard to make out. But after the half-way point, it all picks up. The animation becomes brilliant and fluid, the MASK's dialogue becomes much more readable, and the blood and such becomes more bearable as someone with an actual conscience gets ahold of the MASK.

It is actually a pretty good read; just be ready to be a little bit spooked, or else you'll start seeing that green face around every dark corner...

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny in a Sick Way, Feb 9 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Mask The Mask (Paperback)
I picked up this gem a couple of years ago at a comic shop and I loved this graphic novel from page 1. I saw the movie when i was a little kid and i pciked up this book, but there is a complete difference between the Stanley Ipkiss in the movie and the one in the comic. In the movie, The Mask (Stanley Ipkiss) doesnt kill people but in the book he is a homicidal maniac, . Even though the comic is violent, there is something comical about. He acts like a cartoon character and he says some funny things. If you ever wondered what it would be like if a Warner Bros. cartoon character existed in our world than read this.
