From Amazon.com

Frivolous and formulaic, Twanged features a cursed Irish fiddle, eccentrics summering at the Hamptons, and an egg-eating wacko stalking a redheaded country-music singer. In her fourth adventure in the series, detective Regan Reilly (armed with a pistol in her fanny pack) must sort out all of these mildly amusing if rarely suspenseful details in her role as protectress of fiddle owner, musician, and stalking victim Brigid O'Neill. A number of subplots and last-minute rescues keep the action moving quickly. As in her other books, whimsical detail is Clark's forte rather than high drama or careful consideration of the issues and themes she raises. In this case Irish traditions, feng shui, and the World Wide Web all provide the backdrop and serve as catalysts for the next dastardly deed or safe deliverance.

Clark aficionados will find familiar names and faces: Regan's urbane and sophisticated parents (not surprisingly noted as being on the A list for exclusive invitations by one of the many social-climbing eccentrics) as well as her best friend, Kit, make their requisite reappearances and play minor roles in keeping the fiddle secure and Brigid safe. Clark novices can sleep soundly, as loyal fans already do, knowing the unpleasant evildoers will be safely caught, although not everyone receives his just reward. Securely in the category of mystery lite, Twanged is an easy and festive read--suitable fodder for a few hours' lolling at the beach or with tray table up and seat-belt sign on. --Ce texte provient de la Hardcover édition.

From Library Journal

Country music star and expert fiddler Brigid O'Neill hires Regan Reilly, series protagonist (Snagged, Audio Reviews LJ 9/1/93), to act as her bodyguard. Brigid is uneasy about some strange "fan" letters. Someone has also discovered that her wonderful, new Irish fiddle carries a curse. While Brigid is out partying, another violin is stolen in Ireland. Back in the United States, the threats increase in violence, and someone is almost killed. Clark reads this abridgment of her work with enthusiasm, but two attempted murders, an attempted kidnapping, and attempted grand theft, all by different individuals, are a bit much for one three-hour audiobook. The final scene where everyone, including the violin thief, plan future get-togethers is flat and unlikely. The full-text version is probably better. Not recommended.AI. Pour-El, Iowa State Univ. 1.0étoiles sur 5 stupid and boring, Nov. 18 2003
Par Un client
This review is from: Twanged (Mass Market Paperback)
I saw Ms. Clark on a talk show and decided to give one of her books a try. Yech! The characters are completely unpleasant, their motivations stupid (because I think it's lucky!! C'mon!) The ending is wholly unsatisfying. The main character we come to really dislike is given an undeserving reprieve at the end, while characters we had no feelings about at all are punished. Regan Reilly is a lousy detective with no personality.

As a die-hard country music fan, I thought I'd like this book, but it's obvious Ms. Clark knows nothing about the industry and gave us fans nothing to like. In short, the book seems written on about the fifth grade level and, were it not for the unneccesary twists, inneuendo, and too many characters to keep track of, an 11-year old might enjoy it.

1.0étoiles sur 5 shallow and cliched, Janv. 4 2002
Par Un client
This review is from: Twanged (Mass Market Paperback)
i have never read a mary higgins clark, so i am not comparing carol higgins clark with her mom. but i love detective series fiction, and my daughter gave me this for xmas. i wanted to like it to make my little girl happy, but i couldn't. boy, was it dull. the problem with this story is that these types of books depend on a strong central character, one you want to follow book after book after book, and regan reilly has no personality, no depth, no character, nothing. i knew nothing about her at the beginning of the book, and now that i have finished, i still know nothing about her. she is a cipher. she's not even very smart, or a good detective. she just kind of reacts to things around her, without drawing too many conclusions unless they're shoved under her nose. in addition, the wit is cliched and some of the segments are downright insulting to the intelligence. when carol saw fit to explain to readers who the coppertone girl was, i wanted to slam the book shut in disgust. does she think we live under a rock? and when one of the characters says "world wide web, here i come," i was mortified. what real person says that when they're about to log on to the web? the characters in the book make jokes that aren't funny -- and observations that aren't interesting or original -- and then laugh uproariously. the forced jollity is irritating. you want a good detective to follow? read james lee burke, dennis lehane, james ellroy, stuart woods. you want good, genuinely witty crime stories? read donald westlake. the only thing carol higgins clark does well is funny names: chaplain wickham tinka, bettina tinka, hilda tinka, ms. snookfuss. these are like preston sturges characters. but funny names don't make a good book. carol higgins clark is a waste of time.
